Job Summary
A COTA assists in administering occupational physical therapy to patients and residents in accordance with physician orders and plan of care under the direction and supervision of the Physical Therapist and Director of Clinical Services/Clinical Manager.

- A graduate of an approved education course for occupational therapy assistants.
- Licensed, if applicable, in the state in which they will be practicing.
- Must not be excluded or sanctioned from state or federal program.
- Demonstrate professional attitude and appearance.
- Proficient administrative and communication within department and facility and company.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and equipment used in the practice of their discipline.
- Display working knowledge of multidisciplinary practice scopes in the Outpatient, ALF, ILF or LTC setting.
- Thorough knowledge of all payer source documentation and payment requirements.
- Ability to use analytical skills to develop outcome driven solutions.
- Prior EMR/computer experience.
Must be able to walk, sit, stand, stoop, squat, bend, lift, push, pull, balance, and perform overhead activity without restriction or limitation.
Duties and Responsibilities- Must uphold the professional, legal and ethical standards of practice for occupational therapy as defined by the AOTA and State Practice Act.
- Responsible for service and operational excellence of all assigned activities to ensure the delivery of quality services and/or outcomes required to meet or exceed the expectations of those utilizing or impacted by the department.
- Creates and maintains a patient record for each patient treated.
- Performs selected occupational therapy interventions under the direction and supervision of the occupational therapist.
- Obtains data related to the interventions provided.
- Makes modifications in selected interventions either to progress the patient/client as directed by the occupational therapist or to ensure patient/client safety and comfort.
- Carries out the discharge plan as determined by the OTR.
- Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate application of precautions and contraindications to occupational therapy treatment procedures and modalities.
- Completes documentation according to Facility policies including timeliness and medical necessity support.
- Maintains communication with the supervising OTR.
- Participates in supervisory visits with the supervising OTR as required by the State Practice Act.
- Requests re‑examinations from the supervising OTR when a change in patient status is identified.
- Adheres to state, federal, and third‑party billing regulations.
- Participates in quality and process improvement activities in the department as outlined by the manager and director.
- Partners with multidisciplinary team to carry out the plan of care and advocate for patient.
- Demonstrates effective interdisciplinary communication regarding patient treatments and discharge planning.
- Cooperates with all facility and corporate departments.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding patient and company proprietary information.
