Overview
The City of Elkhorn is seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual to join the Department of Public Works as a Public Works Crew Member
. In this vital role, you’ll contribute to maintaining and improving the city’s streets, parks, wastewater systems, and public facilities, ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and quality of life for residents. Under the guidance of the Director of Public Works and DPW Lead positions, responsibilities focus on repairing and maintaining public buildings, grounds, streets, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, and essential equipment, directly supporting efficient city operations.

Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM - Additional
Hours:
May include Saturdays or shifts outside regular hours to support special events, respond to snow emergencies, or address other time‑sensitive needs.
Anticipated hiring range: $24.38 to $25.36 per hour, depending on qualifications. Full salary range extends to $32.81 per hour.

- Perform street, sanitary, and storm sewer maintenance: maintain streets and signs; collect and chip brush; plow and haul snow; trim trees; clean and repair sewers; build catch basins; install decorations; mowing.
- Perform general Public Works duties: basic carpentry, cement, asphalt, and equipment maintenance; haul dirt and gravel; paint roads and buildings; erect voting booths; lawn and playing field maintenance.
- High school diploma and one to two years’ experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
- Valid Class B Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within one year.
- Reside within fifteen (15) miles of the city limits or ability to establish residency within one year.
Skills and Abilities
- Some knowledge of municipal public works and utility operations.
- Some knowledge of the care and maintenance of public property and infrastructure.
- Skill in operating various vehicles and machinery such as a pick‑up truck, dump truck, front‑end loader, tractor, paint sprayer, mechanical tools, pick axe, shovel, rake, saws, power tools, cement tools, snow blower, sweeper, grader, lawn mower, tractor, and other manual tools used in building and grounds maintenance.
- Ability to climb ladders and use power tools for installation and maintenance of facilities.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret documents such as sewer reports, invoices, vehicle maintenance slips, material safety data sheets, daily work schedules, and timesheets.
- Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow instructions.
- Ability to use and interpret sewer maps, blueprints, and policy and procedure books.
- Ability to communicate effectively with City personnel (Police, Fire Department, Crew lead, DPW Operations Manager, City Administrator) and the public to convey or exchange information.
