Job Title
Hwy Maintenance Worker/Senior – Elkhorn (Evergreen) (Open)

PayBase rate $20.39 per hour. Eligible for $21.953 per hour upon promotion for eligible CDL holders. Additional $1 per hour for CDL holders after 1, 3, and 5 years of continuous service.
Job OverviewThe Nebraska Department of Transportation seeks a dedicated and hardworking team player to build and maintain a convenient, safe, and innovative statewide transportation system.
Responsibilities- Operate all types of highway maintenance equipment such as trucks, rollers, front‑end loaders, tractors, motor graders, snowplows, draglines, backhoes, and distributors.
- Operate specialized equipment for tasks such as lay‑down machines, rock cutters, snoopers, pavement stripers, drilling or milling machinery, gas transports, semi‑truck trailers, and chip spreaders.
- Identify preventative maintenance needs; participate in equipment servicing and repair; maintain grounds and buildings of maintenance yards.
- Patch roadways, broad pavement surfaces, and structures; repair signs; erect and remove snow fences; repair bridges, culverts, and other structures.
- Move, drag, lift, load, and unload equipment, materials, supplies and hazardous materials within weight restrictions; spread and tamp surfacing materials.
- Train maintenance coworkers in specific tasks and job practices to improve performance levels.
- Perform snow removal and other emergency response duties as needed, including nights, weekends, adverse weather, and short‑notice call‑outs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Minimum:
At least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license. - Highway Maintenance Worker/Senior:
Must hold a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements within 60 days of employment. - Preferred:
Experience operating heavy equipment or farming background; valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement; commercial pesticide applicator license; basic computer experience. - Additional:
Valid Class A CDL with O restriction and tanker endorsement required within 90 days of hire; CDL training costs paid by NDOT. - Required to be on‑call and respond during non‑scheduled hours, holidays, weekends, and emergencies; must be able to report within 45 minutes for highway emergencies.
- Must be able to safely move, drag, and lift up to 60 pounds frequently and 90 pounds infrequently; work in outdoor temperature extremes; operate around high‑speed traffic.
- Strong communication, basic computer and arithmetic skills, ability to learn new technology, safety‑oriented, respectful, and sound judgment.
