Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, and Interviews

The City of Elkins Police Department is actively recruiting new officers to help fulfill its mission of providing public safety and maintaining order—while upholding the U.S. Constitution and the West Virginia Constitution. We are committed to the principles of integrity, fairness, respect, and professionalism in all we do.

For WV Certified Officers:

• $15,000 incentive paid upon hiring
• $5,000 additional incentive after two years of satisfactory service

For Uncertified Candidates:

• $3,000 incentive upon successful completion of the WV Law Enforcement Academy and certification
• $1,500 additional incentive after two years of satisfactory service

Returning Elkins Officers:

• For eligible reinstated officers, the City will cover any outstanding contractual obligations owed to another police department.

• Enforce city, county, and state laws; initiate investigations
• Patrol and respond to calls to protect life and property
• Issue citations, make arrests, and direct traffic
• Collaborate with law enforcement and emergency services
• Operate tactical equipment; conduct accident investigations
• Maintain detailed reports and records
• Engage in public hearings, media events, and community outreach
• Support departmental policies, budget, and operations
• Perform other duties as assigned

• Must be at least 18 years old on the day of the written exam
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must pass a physical exam, drug screening, and law enforcement qualification tests
• Must have a valid driver’s license
