Summary
Join the Indian Health Service as a Supervisory Dentist and make a meaningful impact providing compassionate, culturally responsive oral health care to American Indian and Alaska Native communities. This position leads the Dental Program while providing comprehensive preventive, restorative, surgical, and emergency dental services in support of quality patient care and the Service Unit mission.

DutiesMajor Duties:
- Serves as Supervisory Dentist for the Dental Program, providing administrative oversight, clinical leadership, and direction for dental services within the Service Unit.
- Supervises assigned dental staff, including assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, approving leave, identifying training needs, and participating in recruitment and personnel actions.
- Provides a full range of dental services for pediatric and adult patients, including examinations, diagnosis, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, endodontics, prosthodontics, periodontal procedures, and emergency dental care. Performs both routine and complex dental procedures consistent with clinical privileges.
- Manages patient care activities, including clinic scheduling, referrals, consultations, and coordination of Purchased/Referred Care services.
- Ensures compliance with Indian Health Service policies, accreditation standards, infection control requirements, and quality improvement activities.
- Provides oral health education and preventive services to patients, families, and the community.

Conditions of employment:
The selected individual may be subject to a probationary period. ESEP appointees typically serve a two year trial period. A one‑year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.
U.S. Citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. This position is covered by Public Law 101‑630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Candidates must not have been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.
The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Background Investigation RequirementThis position requires the successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment. Applicants must complete all required background investigation forms within five (5) calendar days of issuance.
QualificationsApplicants must meet the following basic requirements:
- Education: Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Licensure: Passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Experience: One or more full years of professional dentistry work equivalent to at least the next lower grade level for GS‑12 level and above assignments. Experience may include evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases and related procedures.
- Specialty Experience (if applicable): Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Dental Public Health. Applicants must demonstrate status as a specialist, including board certification or equivalent training.
