Overview

The Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is seeking a Principal to work at Independence High School located on the campus of the Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC) in Elko, NV. NYTC is a 64‑bed staff‑secure facility for male and female youth ages 14 to 18. The position provides counseling, case management, direct clinical services, and behavioral and human services to youth.

Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. and we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

This is a full‑time position with an anticipated work schedule of 6 a‑5 p, Monday‑Thursday, that includes a variable work agreement with overtime after 40 hours per week.

Responsibilities

Under general direction of the Superintendent, the Principal is responsible for the planning, development, organization, and supervision of comprehensive academic, vocational, and physical education programs for adjudicated juveniles assigned to a youth training facility.

Administer the school curriculum by supervising the instructional staff in the development, implementation, and revision of academic, vocational, and physical education programs to provide an effective educational program for students in compliance with state and federal regulations.

Provide leadership and direct, develop, and monitor the implementation of the agency’s school‑related policies and procedures, including establishing academic program objectives, developing policies for curriculum and program development, student conduct, and school activities, evaluating and disciplining teaching staff, disseminating information to staff members, and coordinating procedures with administrative and home‑life staff.

Prepare grant proposals and monitor grant programs for federal and state funding, justify needs, establish project objectives, develop staffing and budget projections, implement projects, maintain required records, and evaluate program results.

Direct or participate in developing an educational plan for each student, scheduling students into appropriate classes, assessing student information, coordinating with the classification counselor, determining required course subjects, issuing transcripts and diplomas, and revising schedules as necessary.

Direct or participate in maintaining standards of student conduct, enforcing discipline, conducting surveillance, establishing learning environments, ensuring follow‑up conferences, counseling students involved in serious incidents, and providing training to instructional staff on supervision and discipline methods.

Supervise professional and administrative support staff, including recruitment, hiring, scheduling, substitution arrangements, counseling, motivation, professional development, and performance evaluation.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Possession of a valid Nevada limited school administrator endorsement or a professional school administrator endorsement and four years of teaching experience at K‑12 in schools approved by the State.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Detailed knowledge of: modern educational theories and principles in an institutional setting.

Working knowledge of: all aspects of school administration and supervision; descriptive statistics such as measures of central tendency; current issues in secondary education; core subjects of a high school curriculum; statutes and regulations pertaining to the field of education.

General knowledge of: the principles and practices of budgeting, accounting, and purchasing.

Ability to: maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference, or hostility; write concise, logical, grammatically correct analytical reports; prioritize workload and accomplish tasks within established time frames; work independently; acquire and analyze information from various sources; effectively communicate using simple and professional language with students and professionals.
