Bald Mountain is an open‑pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource in the largest private mining land package in the U.S. The mine is located in White Pine County, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. Bald Mountain and the nearby Round Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.
Job SummaryThe Chief Geologist is responsible for providing leadership in Geology to the technical service group, the mining department and mining contractors to ensure that the mine functions effectively and safely. The role maintains and supports procedures and work practices aimed at preventing accidents or injuries.
Essential Functions- Develop geotechnical design criteria to support safe and optimal mine operations.
- Supervise ore control and sampling to support mine planning, operations and projects.
- Make recommendations on ground control performance to guarantee safe operation and to optimize ore deposit recovery.
- Proactively perform site inspections.
- Supervise resource modelling and estimations.
- Plan and budget infill and exploration drilling programs.
- Supervise plan and budget for geology requirements.
- Coordinate the mine planning short term and medium term material estimations.
- Develop, maintain and update structural and geology models.
- Effectively communicate geology outcomes.
- Provide comprehensive and timely contributions to the daily, weekly, monthly and annual reports.
- Improve the overall safety performance of the site including facilitating Job Safety Analyses and Incident Analyses.
- Train and mentor engineer, geologist and hydrogeologist in all aspects of Geology.
- Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality, and code of conduct.
- Punctuality and regular attendance required.
- Perform other related functions as assigned by Technical Services Manager.
- Bachelor degree in Geology.
- Postgraduate degree in Geology is preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of geology experience in metal mining.
- Hydrology and geotech experience is desirable.
- Practical experience with ore control and sampling techniques.
- Experience in resource modelling.
- Understanding of leach and flotation ore processing techniques.
- Understanding of rock mass strength, structural characterization and slope stability controls.
- High level of computer literacy with specialized software such as Leapfrog.
- Computer literacy with specialized mining software.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Effective decision making and problem solving skills.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and schedule time to achieve overall objectives.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to delegate.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Adheres to all safety and environmental considerations.
- Strong commitment to safe working practices.
- Wears personal protective equipment at all times while in the production environment.
- Alert and observes, corrects, and reports unsafe conditions.
- Follows operating procedures and complies with all regulatory requirements.
