Bailiffs are law enforcement officers who play an important role in the courtroom. They are primarily responsible for maintaining order and security in the courtroom and assisting the judge in the orderly conduct of a trial or day-to-day court proceedings.

  • Adhere to the Model Code of Conduct for Court Professionals in the State of Nevada
  • Comply with any and all policies adopted by your assigned judicial department
  • Protect the judicial process by ensuring the safe and secure conduct of judicial proceedings and the protection of judges, jurors, and other members of the public
  • Transport prisoners to and from the courtroom during trial while in the courthouse facility
  • Copy and post daily case schedules
  • Unlock/lock courtrooms and jury rooms and ensure that they are neat and orderly
  • Sign in all persons appearing in court and ensure each is on the docket
  • Accurately completes work assignments in a timely manner
  • Advises supervisor of project/work status
  • Answer telephone calls from attorneys, litigants, law enforcement, and general public
  • Develop courtroom emergency policies, procedures, and evacuation plans and coordinate training of the same
  • Assisting the judge and staff in the orderly conduct of a trial
  • Assesses, investigates and mitigates threats against the judiciary
  • Perform daily inspections of the court building and assigned areas for the presence of contraband, weapons, unauthorized persons, or any other breach of security
  • Attend Court Security meetings to discuss and take action on any items posing security threats or concerns to the court, court personnel, and courthouse.
  • Occasionally provide Bailiff coverage for other courts and/or visiting Judges
  • Maintain and ensure proper working order of all personal and court-issued duty equipment to include, firearms, radios, handcuffs, and any other equipment that may apply
  • Is the point of contact for the department with NV P.O.S.T. and maintains training files/records and enters all trainings into the NV P.O.S.T. record keeping system
  • Complete other duties as assigned
  • Knowledge
    • Working knowledge and correct usage of business English including spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and formats.
    • Working knowledge of personal computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases for the purposes of creating, editing, and distributing information.
    • Thorough knowledge of all applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations, city by-laws, ordinances, department rules and regulations, and relevant court rulings.
  • Skills & Abilities
    • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Understanding and carrying out complex written and oral communications.
    • Complying with Elko County policies, departmental procedures, and the Model Code of Conduct for Court Professionals in the State of Nevada.
    • Maintain confidentiality.
    • Must be able to communicate with upset parties calmly, and effectively, either in person or on the telephone while working as a representative of the court.
    • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, city, county, state, and federal officials, and the public as needed. Dealing with problems courteously and tactfully.
    • Ability to follow and enforce strict procedures in courts to ensure everyone’s safety.
  • OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
    • Yearly annual physical to ensure fitness for duty
    • Maintain yearly required NV POST training
    • Subject to a mandatory background investigation
  • Work is performed in an office setting.
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate firearms, handcuffs, less lethal weapons, computers, recording equipment, and various pieces of office equipment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is required to walk, stand and in some instances run.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet
