SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE

Bailiffs are law enforcement officers who play an important role in the courtroom. They are primarily responsible for maintaining order and security in the courtroom and assisting the judge in the orderly conduct of a trial or day-to-day court proceedings.

Bailiffs work with a variety of court personnel, government employees, and lawyers. Although their primary role is to maintain order and provide security, many of their day-to-day duties are administrative in nature.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions:

  • Adhere to the Model Code of Conduct for Court Professionals in the State of Nevada
  • Comply with any and all policies adopted by your assigned judicial department
  • Protect the judicial process by ensuring the safe and secure conduct of judicial proceedings and the protection of judges, jurors, and other members of the public
  • Transport prisoners to and from the courtroom during trial while in the courthouse facility
  • Copy and post daily case schedules
  • Maintain courtroom supplies
  • Unlock/lock courtrooms and jury rooms and ensure that they are neat and orderly
  • Polish and fill water pitchers for court and jury rooms
  • Maintain supplies of paper, pencils, water, and other materials for use during court
  • Sign in all persons appearing in court and ensure each is on the docket
  • Order any new or replacement supplies for courtroom operations
  • Accurately completes work assignments in a timely manner
  • Advises supervisor of project/work status
  • Set new or continued hearing dates in the court calendar and electronic case management system as necessary
  • Answer telephone calls from attorneys, litigants, law enforcement, and general public
  • Schedule court parties for random drug testing, as ordered
  • Develop courtroom emergency policies, procedures, and evacuation plans and coordinate training of the same
  • Maintains procedures to protect the safety of the judge and the court's property; protects all court personnel, attorneys, and visitors in the courts; maintains security of the jury during all phases of the trial
  • Assisting the judge and staff in the orderly conduct of a trial
  • Assesses, investigates and mitigates threats against the judiciary
  • Perform daily inspections of the court building and assigned areas for the presence of contraband, weapons, unauthorized persons, or any other breach of security
  • Attend Court Security meetings to discuss and take action on any items posing security threats or concerns to the court, court personnel, and courthouse.
  • Take files and documents to the Clerk’s office to be processed, pull files for the next week of court hearings
  • Make sure proper court procedures are followed, including procedures to follow in the event of an emergency. Additionally, take emergency action and/or notify emergency personnel in the event of security developments in the courtroom
  • Represents the Court with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public. Maintains the ethics and integrity of the Court
  • Occasionally provide Bailiff coverage for other courts and/or visiting Judges
  • Maintain and ensure proper working order of all personal and court-issued duty equipment to include, firearms, radios, handcuffs, and any other equipment that may apply
  • Is the point of contact for the department with NV P.O.S.T. and maintains training files/records and enters all trainings into the NV P.O.S.T. record keeping system
  • Complete other duties as assigned
Trial/Courtroom Duties
  • Open court and inform the judge that the court is ready
  • Arrange the courtroom for jury selection, take charge of jurors, assist jurors in finding seats, and distribute jury packets upon completion of service
  • Ensures potential witnesses are separated from jurors prior to and throughout the trial. Guarantees that the jury has limited contact with those outside of the courtroom
  • Coordinates security for trials at the Court and at locations away from the Court House, design courtroom arrangements, arrange for extra security and screening and conducts security protective sweeps of the location each day
