Police Department Director
In conjunction with Police Chief, responsible for directing, supervising, planning and coordinating the activities and staff of the Police Department's Operations and Administration Divisions; assists the Police Chief in overall operation of the department, and provides responsible and complex management level support to the Police Chief as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This job class is a director level classification, responsible for directing the work of sworn and non-sworn staff for all Police Department functions and activities. It is distinguished from the Police Chief in that the latter is an executive level job classification responsible for directing all Police Department functions and activities.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but not limited to:
- Develops and directs the implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the assigned division; directs the preparation and administration of the division's budget; forecasts additional resource and financial needs.
- Participates in selection of staff; plans, organizes, administers, reviews and evaluates the activities of assigned staff; trains staff in work processes and procedures; assists in the investigation, review and documentation of incidents and injuries involving staff and equipment.
- Ensures that safe work practices and procedures are followed and that appropriate safety equipment is utilized.
- Interpret departmental and City policies and procedures to staff. Ensure compliance of assigned activities to pertinent codes, regulations, and guidelines.
- Monitors and evaluates department responses to critical incidents and operations of specialty units; conducts complex or sensitive investigations; interviews citizens in connection with complaints or suggestions regarding police protection.
- Coordinates division activities with City departments, outside agencies and organizations to ensure adherence to City policies and procedures. Build and maintain strong relationships with departmental staff, other City employees, and the public; utilizing leadership, innovation and communication to efficiently and effectively protect the Elko community through collaborative efforts with the community and other departments.
- Assist in developing and implementing operational plans to assure action is appropriate and operations align with mission statement.
- Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; assesses and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identifies opportunities for improvement and implements improvements; directs the implementation of City Codes, policies, and operational changes.
- Discuss and coordinate discipline and other personnel issues via the chain of command, ensuring enforcement of all rules, regulations and policy.
- Plans, directs, and coordinates the division's work plan; confers with management and supervisory staff to identify and resolve problems; assigns projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures.
- Oversees fleet management functions; ensure that vehicles are available, repairs are completed, and new vehicles are ordered; interface with the City maintenance staff to ensure that service requirements are met and that repairs are accomplished.
- Maintains relevant training to ensure all sworn personnel are in compliance with Nevada State Peace Officers and Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) to include mandatory Police One Academy training requirements.
- Conducts inspections of personnel facilities and equipment to ensure that standards of operation and procedures are maintained; oversee the acquisition, use and care of equipment.
- Performs all aspects of grant management, including applications, administration, tracking and reporting.
- Maintains and facilitates public relations and cooperative working relationships with news media, schools, local organizations and the general public; attends and speaks at community functions and meetings. Performs the duties of Public Information Officer as assigned; prepares press releases and confers with the media in matters related to assigned activities.
- Attends and participates in professional association meetings and conferences; stay abreast of new trends, innovations, and regulations related to community policing.
