Position: CORRECTIONAL NURSE 2

Job Summary

The Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS) is recruiting for a Correctional Nurse 2 to work at the Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC), a 48‑bed, staff‑secure facility for male youth ages 14‑18. The role provides professional nursing care in a correctional setting, coordinating and evaluating health care services, maintaining supplies, conducting weekly clinics, administering medication, responding to medical and psychiatric emergencies, and maintaining documentation.

This full‑time position hours are 7 am – 3:30 pm weekdays (or alternate 7 am – 7:30 pm shifts with alternate 8‑hour shift every other week), includes weekends and holidays with overtime after 40 hours.

Essential Qualifications
  • License as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which was in a correctional or institutional setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Job Duties
  • Identify patient health‑care needs using professional nursing assessment; make comprehensive clinical observations and evaluations of health needs, and record signs and symptoms.
  • Prepare nursing care plans, assess psychological and physical condition, confer with other health‑care professionals, develop diagnoses and treatment plans, set immediate and long‑term care goals, and revise plans as needed.
  • Coordinate health services and treatment; conduct sick calls for inmates with medical complaints, identify inmates requiring immediate medical treatment, obtain physician orders, and collaborate with staff to ensure optimum patient care.
  • Administer medication to identified patients as prescribed; ensure correct time, dosage and route, deliver medication to confined cells; count and monitor controlled medications and sharps.
  • Perform physical assessments; assist in examinations and diagnostic testing; obtain samples for laboratory tests and perform ordered tests.
  • Provide emergency medical treatments such as CPR and first aid to stabilize patients.
  • Document nurse progress notes in medical charts, review charts for changes in orders, and prepare reports and summaries; perform quality improvement activities such as auditing charts and compiling statistics.
  • Carry out therapeutic procedures to provide emotional and physical comfort of patients.
  • Provide patient education on good health habits and answer questions regarding prescribed treatment; provide health‑related education and training to staff.
  • Prepare and maintain medical treatment rooms; order and stock medical supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain safety, health and well‑being of individuals in the therapeutic environment; assist in restraining patients who are a threat to themselves or others following facility procedures.
  • Coordinate and/or participate in clinics; schedule appointments; conduct screening tests; administer immunizations; create and maintain records.
  • Coordinate outside medical appointments; schedule appointments; arrange transportation; provide special instructions.
  • May delegate direct care duties to other personnel consistent with their licensure; supervise inmates assigned to the infirmary.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Under general supervision, perform the full range of duties described in the series concept; roles may include infection control, outpatient services or other specialized assignments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation; documentation process; medication use; nursing principles; therapeutic interventions; medical equipment; routine laboratory tests; nutrition and personal hygiene; human growth and development; physical restraint techniques.
  • General knowledge of quality assurance, utilization review audit, compliance activities, and staff education.
  • Ability to provide nursing services within the security requirements of a correctional environment; respond to and resolve patient care issues; independently perform specialized assignments such as infection control, quality assurance, utilization review, staff training or outpatient services.
