We are looking for a proactive and detail‑oriented Environmental Technician to join the Environmental Team at the Cortez operation. This position is ideal for someone who is interested in developing their skills and advancing their career in the environmental field. The team is primarily responsible for maintaining environmental compliance by assessing and mitigating potential impacts from mining. To support both open pit and underground mining, Cortez is seeking an individual to collect various monitoring data to support compliance with environmental permits and programs.

Responsibilities
  • Collect environmental data and samples necessary for environmental compliance reporting, ensuring proper sampling techniques and attention to our quality assurance/quality control processes.
  • Calibrate and maintain a variety of instruments and ensure proper use to gather data and conduct monitoring.
  • Manage the sample collection and shipment process to ensure appropriate handling of field samples, duplicates, and blanks by developing and maintaining accurate chains of custody.
  • Complete inspections required by various compliance programs, documenting and actioning any needed improvements.
  • Ensure accurate documentation with sample collection and associated field data.
  • Manage and maintain analytical data within the EQuIS database.
  • Provide training for site personnel, where necessary.
  • Travel safely to remote areas of the site for sample and monitoring data collection.
  • Pump and piezometer installation in monitoring wells at various depths.
  • Troubleshoot sampling equipment, pumps, weather stations, transducers or other equipment, as necessary.
  • Adhere to state and federal health and safety regulations, as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or related field or a minimum of 1‑2 years in an environmental technician or similar role – preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors throughout the year, with little supervision in remote areas; required.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform repairs and maintenance to sampling equipment to include but not limited to pumps, tubing, calibration meters, etc.; required.
  • Ability to operate light vehicles, off‑road vehicles, and trailers while navigating dirt roads making decisions to prevent property damage and safety events; required.
  • Ability to regularly walk over uneven, sloped, rocky, wet or icy ground; required.
  • Ability to lift 50 or more pounds consistently and safely; required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with others; required.
  • Previous experience in data collection, database management, field instrumentation calibration/use and electronics; preferred.
  • Strong computer skills including experience with PowerPoint, Word & Excel required, experience with systems such as Isometrix, SAP, and Equis; preferred.
