Heavy Equipment Mechanic
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining mining and support equipment used in surface and underground mining operations. This role ensures equipment reliability, minimizes downtime, and supports safe and efficient production operations. Common equipment includes haul trucks, loaders, excavators, drills, dozers, graders, crushers, conveyors, hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and related mining machinery.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled servicing on heavy mining equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical problems using diagnostic tools and service manuals.
- Repair or replace engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, suspensions, and drivetrain components.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and electrical systems on mining equipment.
- Rebuild components such as pumps, cylinders, differentials, and final drives.
- Conduct welding and fabrication repairs as needed.
- Use computerized diagnostic systems and OEM software to identify equipment faults.
- Interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
- Perform operational testing after repairs to verify equipment performance and safety.
- Follow all MSHA, OSHA, company, and site-specific safety procedures.
- Conduct lockout/tagout procedures and maintain safe work practices.
- Report unsafe conditions, equipment failures, and maintenance concerns.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
- Complete maintenance reports, work orders, and equipment inspection records accurately.
- Track parts usage and communicate maintenance needs to supervisors or planners.
- Assist with inventory management of tools and replacement parts.
- Respond to field breakdowns and emergency repair situations.
- Work collaboratively with operators, supervisors, and maintenance teams to reduce downtime.
- Participate in shift handovers and maintenance planning meetings.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Completion of a diesel technology, heavy equipment technology, or industrial maintenance program preferred.
- 2–5 years of experience maintaining heavy equipment, preferably in mining, construction, or industrial environments.
- Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and mining equipment diagnostics preferred.
- Surface and underground mining maintenance experience is highly desirable.
- Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities.
- Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrains.
- Ability to read schematics and technical manuals.
- Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Ability to work independently and in team environments.
- Strong attention to safety and detail.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, overtime, and outdoor conditions.
