Carlin - Drill & Shovel Mechanic; Tech or Higher

• Welding: basic welding (small repairs) – demonstrate proper use of cutting torch, choose proper setting and wire for welding sheet metal, proper installation of wear material (liners, wear plate and GET), complete weld using standard structural or mild steel welding procedures, inspect for quality of repair, use proper weld methods, remove cap reinforcement, clean up work area, remove LOTO.
• Electrical: basic electric troubleshooting including reading schematics – use a digital multimeter to take simple readings (voltage, continuity, resistance, amperage), describe series vs. parallel circuit, and demonstrate the use of a test light. Locate and apply symbol legends to interpret schematics. Visually inspect wiring harnesses, identify positive and negative terminals on an alternator and starter, differentiate between basic electrical and electronic control circuits, and understand Ohm’s law.

• Engine – change alternator belts and fan belts.
• Component – replace drive lines and U-joints.
• Frame & Body – blade swaps.
• Hydraulic: basic hydraulic troubleshooting including reading schematics – identify common components of a hydraulic tank and their function, describe characteristics and functions of hydraulic fluid, explain basic hydraulic principles (pressure x area equals force), explain different types of pumps and motors, explain effects of flow through an orifice, identify the four common pressure control valves, six directional control valves and their functions.
