Job Overview
This position is located in Elko, Nevada. NDOT is currently seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a FLEET SERVICE WORKER 3 to assist with a variety of maintenance and operational tasks. Responsibilities include servicing equipment by lubricating parts, changing oil and filters, performing preventive maintenance to minimize repairs, tire replacement, washing vehicles, and supporting equipment movement as needed.
Additional duties include maintaining cleanliness in the shop and participating in yard clean‑up to ensure a safe and organized work environment. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys hands‑on work and contributing to a team‑oriented atmosphere.
- Servicing equipment by lubricating parts, changing oil and filters, performing preventive maintenance to minimize repairs, tire replacement, washing vehicles, supporting equipment movement, maintaining shop cleanliness, and participating in yard clean‑up.
- Perform preventive maintenance: tune engines, order parts, make minor repairs, examine vehicle/equipment records or preventive maintenance schedule, complete requisitions, check fluid levels, replace filters (engine, transmission, hydraulic, fuel), lubricate, replace spark plugs and wires, replace brakes and adjust ignition timing, replace distributor cap and rotor, change belts and hoses, charge or replace batteries, replace lamps, repack wheel bearings, conduct safety inspections, code repair tasks, and maintain records of work performed.
- Repair or replace tires and rims: remove tire, deflate, repair or replace, reassemble, inflate, balance, and mount.
- Wash and detail vehicles/equipment: steam clean engine or entire vehicle, clean windows, upholstery, and carpets.
- Provide assistance to mechanics and storekeepers by picking up, delivering, and returning equipment and parts and verifying accuracy of invoices and credit memos.
- Reserve vehicles for employees, fuel vehicles, collect usage data, prepare summary reports, and schedule vehicles for service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Under general supervision, perform the full range of duties described in the series concept, perform more extensive maintenance and repair work, and may serve as lead worker to other Fleet Service Workers. Distinguished from lower-level Fleet Service Workers by the variety and complexity of work and the scope of responsibility. This is the journey level in the series.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience diagnosing and performing basic vehicle/equipment repairs and adjustments, performing preventive maintenance on a variety of vehicles/equipment, maintaining vehicle/equipment records and reports; OR one year of experience as a Fleet Service Worker II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
- Principles of automotive repair and preventive maintenance; common methods of hand and power tools and other equipment used in the adjustment and repair of vehicles/equipment.
- Work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction; interact diplomatically with vehicle/equipment users to explain policies and resolve complaints.
- Perform preventive maintenance activities for a variety of vehicles/equipment; diagnose routine mechanical/electrical failures and determine necessary repairs to restore proper working condition; perform vehicle maintenance and repair work on light, medium and heavy equipment and vehicles.
