Northrop Grumman invites candidates for the Environmental Engineer / Principal level positions at the Elkton, Maryland location. The PS&C facility began solid‑propellant rocket operations in 1948 and now designs various propulsion and ordnance systems for governmental and commercial customers.

Job Description

The Environmental Engineer is responsible for environmental and regulatory compliance, administering policies, updating standards, and providing guidance for site operations. The role reviews metrics, conducts risk analyses, and ensures adherence to EPA, state, and local regulations such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, EPCRA, and RCRA. Collaboration includes government entities, contractors, consultants, and key departments.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Interpret and communicate environmental requirements, identify compliance issues, act as subject matter expert, coordinate key initiatives with facility personnel, legal, and stakeholders.
  • Ensure inspections are completed as required (storm water, air quality, spill prevention, etc.).
  • Act as point of contact for regulatory agency interactions, permit evaluation, and new process introductions, including preparation and submission of reports, permits, and notifications to agencies.
  • Ensure environmental work performed by contractors, consultants, and employees meets applicable standards.
  • Conduct internal environmental audits for continuous improvement.
  • Manage risk analysis overview of environmental risks within the company based on tracking and trending of issues or incidents.
  • Drive an environmentally responsible culture within the organization.
  • Complete thorough and accurate incident investigations and associated regulatory reporting, following up on corrective actions.
  • Complete all required internal and external environmental reporting.
  • Support and direct sustainability initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with self‑motivation in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of United States environmental laws.
  • Organizational and project management skills for complex tasks involving multiple internal and external parties.
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Word, and Windows Operating Systems.
  • Effective communication and summarization of information and challenges.
  • Ability to travel 10%.
Hiring Levels

This position can be hired as either a Principal (Level
3) or Senior Principal (Level
4). Level of hire depends on education, experience, and competency.

Qualifications for Level 2
  • Diploma and 6 years of experience, or relevant bachelor's degree with 2 years of experience, or relevant master’s degree with 1 year of experience.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience with environmental regulations and/or compliance programs.
  • Experience communicating complex regulatory requirements and their impacts.
  • US citizenship and ability to obtain secret clearance.
Qualifications for Level 3
  • Diploma and 9 years of experience, or relevant bachelor's degree with 5 years of experience, or relevant master’s degree with 3 years of experience.
  • 5 years of relevant experience with environmental regulations and/or compliance programs.
  • Experience communicating complex regulatory requirements and their impacts.
  • US citizenship and ability to obtain secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications for Both Levels
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources, or closely related field.
  • Current secret clearance.
Salary and Benefits

Primary Level Salary Range: $79,600.00 - $.

Secondary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $.
