Job Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care for residents of all ages in long-term care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. Demonstrates knowledge of nursing principles for the resident in the relevant clinical setting, and demonstrates competency and practices within the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge, utilizing appropriate age and population-specific standards related to the physical and psychosocial needs of the resident as per the care plan.

The LPN possesses the ability to perform testing to evaluate data reflective of the resident's status, to provide the care needed, to recognize problems, recommend solutions, and respond effectively in an emergent situation. The LPN ensures the health, comfort and safety of residents, contributes to their assessment and administers medications or treatments as ordered, provides technical support to healthcare professionals as needed, documents resident interactions and related outcomes, and works collaboratively with other healthcare team members, communicating clearly and maintaining confidentiality.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates knowledge of nursing principles for the resident in the relevant clinical setting.
  • Demonstrates competency and practices within the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge, utilizing appropriate age and population-specific standards related to the physical and psychosocial needs of the resident as per the care plan.
  • Possesses the ability to perform testing to evaluate data reflective of the resident's status and provide the required care.
  • Recognizes problems, recommends solutions, and responds effectively to assist in emergent situations.
  • Ensures the health, comfort, and safety of residents.
  • Contributes to the assessment of residents and administers medications or treatments as ordered.
  • Provides technical support to healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Documents resident interactions and outcomes related to resident care, medication, behavior, activity, and dietary.
  • Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with residents, health care providers, and the public.
  • Works effectively with professional and supportive personnel as a member of an interdisciplinary care team.
  • Communicates clearly and maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Counsels residents, family members, and/or resident advocates under the direction of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician on prevention and treatment plans.
  • Applies knowledge of resident education principles to develop a self-care program.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program and hold a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license.
  • Associate degree in practical nursing is preferred.
  • If the position requires IV therapy/management skills, graduation from a Board-approved AASPN program where IV therapy is part of the curriculum or completion of an IV Therapy course approved by the North Dakota Board of Nursing is required.
  • Must have attended a pre-licensure nursing program that included supervised clinical experience across the life span or have a minimum of 400 hours of experience as an LPN at another facility.
  • Currently holds an unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license with the state nursing board and/or possesses multi-state licensure privileges.
  • Obtains and maintains required department-specific competencies and certifications.
  • Completes required annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training requirements of the department and facility.
