Position: 2025-26 Lead Custodian

POSITION:
Lead Custodian, 8 hrs a day, 260 days a year (Night Shift 2:30pm-11:00pm)

LOCATION:

Ellensburg High School [subject to change District locations as needed]

Maintenance and Facilities Director;

Head Custodian JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Maintenance and Facilities Director and the School Principal, and the immediate supervision of the Head Custodian, the Lead Custodian assists in leading and directing custodial personnel in daily custodial operations at the assigned Ellensburg School District facility. In addition to regularly assigned custodial duties, this position performs and coordinates skilled cleaning, routine maintenance, and facility support tasks to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, staff, families, and the public.

The work requires physical effort, attention to detail, and the ability to perform tasks independently with minimal supervision.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead, support, and work alongside custodial staff in the cleaning and maintenance of school facilities.
  • Direct and assign routine and special custodial tasks, including facility requests, work orders, minor maintenance, trouble calls, and special cleaning services, as directed by the Maintenance/Custodial Director or Head Custodian.
  • Adjust assigned work areas as needed to provide coverage due to staffing shortages or operational needs.
  • Vacuum carpets and sweep, dust, and mop floors in classrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas.
  • Empty all trash receptacles
  • Check, restock, and maintain paper product dispensers (toilet paper, paper towels) in classrooms and restrooms.
  • Clean and disinfect restroom and nurse’s office floors using approved disinfectants.
  • Clean, disinfect, and sanitize drinking fountains, toilets, urinals, sinks, and fixtures; polish chrome surfaces.
  • Clean doors, door hardware, and interior and exterior windows as needed.
  • Spot clean carpets, walls, and floors as required.
  • Replace burned-out light bulbs and perform minor electrical or plumbing tasks when appropriate; report non-emergency or complex repairs to the Head Custodian for follow-up.
  • Inspect facilities daily for vandalism and report concerns to the Head Custodian and/or law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Secure all doors and windows and ensure lights are turned off when closing the facility.
  • Perform seasonal duties, including limited watering tasks and snow and ice removal from walkways, steps, and entrances.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • During school breaks and vacation periods, assist with deep cleaning of building interiors and exteriors using manual and powered cleaning equipment. Tasks include cleaning walls, floors, woodwork, and windows, and assisting with painting or redecorating classrooms, hallways, and other facility areas.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Maintenance/Custodial Director or Head Custodian.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of custodial practices, safety procedures, and cleaning standards.
  • Basic electrical and plumbing systems for emergency situations.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to interact positively, respectfully, and professionally with students, staff, families, and the public.
  • Monitor and review custodial work assignments to ensure quality control and completion of tasks.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, alarms, and trouble calls.
  • Maintain flexibility and adapt to changing priorities while coordinating effectively with custodial staff and building administrators.
  • Knowledge of proper floor care techniques, including sealing, waxing, stripping, and polishing.
  • Willingness to accept direction and constructive feedback from supervisors.
  • Ability to perform duties independently with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to climb ladders (step and extension ladders up to 40 feet) and safely operate district Genie lifts.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, and professional appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
