- Salary: $85,000 - $100,000 (depending on experience and education)

We are seeking a Metallurgical Engineer to support the Aberdeen Research Operation. The role involves developing and evaluating novel alloys and processing methods to improve the performance, durability, and cost-effectiveness of structural metals for future Army systems.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Develop novel alloys and post‑processing techniques to enhance performance of cast, wrought, and welded structural metals, and quantify improvements for Army systems integration.
- Help develop optimal heat‑treatment and alloying strategies across a range of protection and lethality applications, applying metals‑characterization and testing methods to inform system‑level material selection.
- Develop, prototype, and evaluate new structural materials to enable unique processing strategies.
- Characterize resulting materials using metallography and electron microscopy, assess microstructure, and perform thermal and mechanical testing to refine future material designs.
- Acquire expertise in machining (grinding, milling, grit blasting), casting, forging, rolling, welding, heat treatment, fixture and machine fabrication, machining polishing, microscopy, and mechanical testing (tensile, hardness, impact).
- Document processing, characterization, and testing in written reports with graphical and statistical analysis; contextualize results with historic data and utilize machine‑learning models and standard trend fitting to assess improvements.
Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical or Materials Sciences and 2+ years of relevant experience. Exceptional candidates with less experience may be considered.
- Basic knowledge of materials and manufacturing technologies.
- Experience in mechanical testing.
- Knowledge of structural alloy development.
- Knowledge of machining.
- Preferred/Optional (select any):
- Knowledge and experience with structural alloy development.
- Knowledge and/or training in welding.
- Demonstrated experience with developing structure‑processing‑property relationships.
- Demonstrated expertise in structural alloy characterization and analysis.
- Author/co‑author of publication(s) pertaining to structural alloy development.
- Lead presenter at conference presentations.
