Outdoor Rock Climbing Instructor; Part-Time - Recreation & Parks

Howard County Recreation and Parks is seeking part‑time rock climbing instructors to lead rock climbing activities indoor on the Roger Carter Community Center Climbing Wall and outdoor with the Adventure & Outdoor summer camps.

Preferred applicants have previous experience instructing top rope climbing in both gym and outdoor locations in a work or volunteer setting, including teaching technique, flexibility, patience and a positive attitude.

This is a part‑time position with evening and weekend hours (time varies) with a very flexible schedule. Classes and programs are held at Howard County Recreation and Park facilities and parks and various regional paddling locations. Reliable transportation is important.

The instructor will perform instruction, coordination and supervision of duties during climbing classes, open climb sessions and climbing trips for the Adventure, Nature and Outdoor unit, including driving a County vehicle to locations around Maryland.

• Preferred applicants have previous experience instructing top rope climbing in both gym and outdoor locations in a work or volunteer setting, including teaching technique, flexibility, patience and a positive attitude.
• Applicants must be at least 21 yrs old and possess a clean driving record.
• CPR/First Aid certification and previous experience driving with a trailer are preferred.
• Reliable transportation is important.
• Applicant must possess appropriate certifications when applicable to position vacancy.

• Level I – Minimum wage – $18.00 (Paraprofessional) – Includes experience and specialized education and training or certification in skill area.
• Level II – $18.00–$22.00 (Paraprofessional) – Includes two (2) years of professional experience and specialized education and training in a specialized field or a college graduate with two (2) years of experience.
• Level III – $20.00–$32.00 (Professional) – Includes five (5) years of professional experience and specialized education and training in a specialized field or a college graduate with three (3) years of experience.
