Science Division Chair

Qualifications:
- Illinois Administrative License
- Illinois Teaching Certificate
- Type 03, 09 or 10 - Excellent communication, organization, and project management skills
- Strong knowledge of curriculum/instruction/staff development
- Master's Degree (and/or Doctoral Degree)
- Evidence of at least five (5) years of exemplary classroom teaching expertise
- Deep understanding of current curriculum practices, instructional pedagogy, formative and summative assessments, and implications for classrooms
- Deep understanding of the Illinois Learning Standards, leadership standards, school improvement and school leader supervision practices
- Proven leadership skills to facilitate teachers and leaders in curriculum, instruction, and professional development
- Ability to create and use spreadsheets in Excel and Google Sheets (Google Suite)
- Awareness of instructional technology and opportunities for integration with curriculum and instruction
- Proven ability to listen, share ideas, identify obstacles to student achievement, and plan with other administrators
Reports To:
Assistant Principal of Instruction
Supervises:
Division staff (certified and non-certified personnel)
Duration: 10 month + 10 days
General Division Chair Responsibilities:
- Leadership: Demonstrates vision and provides leadership surrounding the school Work Plan. Uses data to analyze strengths and areas of growth for the Division and School. Demonstrates student-centered thinking and problem solving. Advances the profession through participation in local, state and national professional groups. Is an active participant in the Instructional Advisory Council and other School & District leadership teams.
- Curriculum and Instruction: Works with staff and all other stakeholders to identify a curriculum framework and essential understandings that support the mission and work plan. Demonstrates knowledge of the department's curriculum and instruction goals to all stakeholders; serves as the spokesperson on curricular matters. Encourages the staff to be learners and leaders within and without the district. Facilitates and supports articulation of curriculum and program development for grades 6-12 in coordination with district staff.
- Supervision and Evaluation: Works collaboratively to set and maintain standards of effective teaching. Uses both formative and summative staff evaluation procedures to improve teaching. Demonstrates skill in giving feedback to staff about their teaching by:
Visiting classes and preparing observation reports Preparing and sharing non-tenured and tenured teacher summative evaluations Develops, plans, and offers resources for teacher growth and development. - Organizational Management: Facilitates the screening and hiring of division personnel. Assists the Assistant Principal for Instruction in developing the master schedule. Supervises, prepares, and administers the budget. Supervises the use and maintenance of facilities, equipment, supplies, and book orders. Advocates for divisional initiatives within the district and community.

Knowledge:
- Understanding of continuous improvement processes
- Knowledge of all applicable Federal and State education requirements
- Knowledge of School Code requirements
- Experience in the development and implementation of social skills lessons and activities
- Experience in the development and implementation of progress monitoring including data collection, analysis and reporting.

- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of individuals, ranging from employees to parents of students
- Ability to effectively lead/facilitate group processes
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff, students and external entities to raise academic performance

- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Ability to process large amounts of information and organize the information to present it to various individuals who do not possess firsthand knowledge of the situation

- Ability to incorporate and translate organizational and department missions into day-to-day practices
- Ability to use effective instructional strategies and techniques
- Ability to effectively contribute to the accomplishment of organization and department goals as outlined in the district strategic plan
- Ability to assess the effectiveness of programs and activities
- Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from them
- Ability to use computer-driven work processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance programs and software
