Hourly Pay Range

$35.16 - $54.50 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Brief Overview

Responsible for coordinating and directing activities of subordinates engaged in performing routine and non‑routine laboratory analyses in the assigned area of responsibility. In doing so, ensures quality standards relating to the delivery of laboratory services are achieved by reviewing test results obtained and directing the repeat of abnormal results. Monitors maintenance of existing equipment and service contracts for equipment to ensure accuracy of test results, coordinates departmental supply acquisition and utilization, and ensures maintenance of proper stock levels.

Ensures that all staff continually demonstrates excellent customer service.

What will you need
  • HT(ASCP) certification
  • A minimum of 5 years of hands‑on histology experience. Proficient in all areas of histology, including the gross room.
  • Strong communication, problem‑solving, and leadership skills are essential.
  • Prior supervisory or lead experience is preferred.
What will you do
  • In collaboration with Manager, oversee and direct work of assigned subordinates engaged in performing histological processing and tests to obtain data for disease diagnosis and treatment.
  • Interview, hire, orient, train, schedule, evaluate the performance of, and when necessary, discipline personnel. Provide direction, as necessary, to staff regarding sensitive and/or complex work, related problems, resolve complaints and respond to inquiries regarding department operations. Establish section work schedules for assigned staff to ensure adequate coverage and revise schedules to cover absences.
  • Ensure all employees meet Customer Service standards. Regularly review Customer Service goals with employees on an individual basis. Communicate trends to staff and work with staff toward improving deficiencies. Resolve all patient complaints pertaining to subordinate area. Work with management of other departments when patient complaints extend into other areas. Develop new ways to improve customer service and get subordinate staff actively involved in related activities.
  • Gather data regarding projected personnel, supply and equipment needs in order to provide input into the development of Laboratory/Pathology policies, procedures and operating budget. Administer and monitor adherence to same.
  • Coordinate, train, and evaluate students in the clinical practicum program.
  • Write and review department procedure manuals. Update procedures according to CAP standards. Maintain department records and procedures in accordance with CAP and/or other regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure maintenance of adequate levels of supplies necessary to perform clinical laboratory tests. Evaluate quality and cost effectiveness of new or replacement supplies and equipment, and make recommendations to Manager regarding acquisition of same.
  • Ensure department equipment is maintained in safe operating condition and contact Hospital or outside repair personnel as appropriate. Maintain records of service contracts, equipment repairs and the like.
  • Maintain all section records relating to operation of same such as quality control and productivity statistics, proficiency surveys, incident reports and the like. Review and summarize records and prepare reports for management's review.
  • Provide advice and direction to section personnel concerning problems encountered or more complex/sensitive tests. Explain or demonstrate appropriate techniques or methods.
  • Review all abnormal and atypical test results, ensure testing procedures are carried out in accordance with established standards and notifies Manager, Director or Pathologist of such results.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like as allowable.
