Brief Overview

The RN Clinical Nurse Practice Specialist (CNPS) is an expert clinician with advanced education and training. The CNPS applies advanced assessment skills, evidence‑based practices, and clinical expertise to a specific patient population across the system. The CNPS serves as an educator, consultant, and clinical expert, ensuring evidence‑based practices improve quality, cost‑effectiveness, and patient‑focused outcomes across patient care, nursing staff, and organizational systems.

The CNPS mentors nurses and fosters a culture of inquiry.

What You Will Do Clinical Expertise
  • Provide clinical nursing expertise in the nursing specialty area with advanced skills.
  • Assess and recommend education needs through observation, feedback, and direct care review.
  • Support staff in developing and modifying patient care plans.
  • Identify needs via data collection, trend analysis, and outcomes evaluation.
  • Lead process improvement and quality initiatives, implementing change.
  • Serve as a source of evidence‑based, cost‑effective, safe practices and regulatory standards.
  • Evaluate new evidence and research for clinical application.
  • Use evidence to identify practice standards and assess outcomes.
  • Lead integration, management, and evaluation of technology/products to improve safety and outcomes.
  • Partner in developing evidence‑based policies, procedures, and protocols, ensuring sustainable change.
  • Participate in Shared Decision‑Making Councils.
Education
  • Consult with leadership and educators to establish annual competencies and educational needs.
  • Collaborate on programs and presentations using evidence‑based practice and adult learning theory.
  • Provide nursing education in diverse venues and methods.
  • Respond to community learning needs, promoting health, prevention of illness and injury.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate learning and development programs.
  • Participate in designing and evaluating transition‑to‑practice programs for all nurse levels.
  • Collaborate with academic partners to integrate nursing students into the practice environment.
Leadership & Mentorship
  • Serve as an influential leader in interprofessional learning, growth, and practice change.
  • Apply strategies to change clinician behavior and adopt evidence‑based practices.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and emotional intelligence in decision‑making.
  • Mentor clinical nurse and staff nurse educators, supporting advancement.
  • Foster a healthy work environment and build effective teams through coaching.
  • Participate in evidence‑based research projects and mentor others.
  • Engage in professional nursing organizations to disseminate best practices.
  • Create an accountable nursing care environment promoting continuous learning and ownership.
  • Advocate for nurses' full practice scope in healthcare delivery.
What You Will Need
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (required);
    Doctorate in Nursing (preferred).
  • 5+ Years of clinical experience in a medical center, hospital, or academic setting.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois.
  • BLS – American Heart Association (AHA) basic life support certification.
  • Nursing specialty certification (or certification within one year of assignment if none).
  • Adult learning knowledge and expertise.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Flexibility in work schedule and effective interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage diverse healthcare audiences.
  • Commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and goal achievement.
  • Presentation skills for organizational education.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education.
