RN Inpatient Psych – Behavioral Health

Location: Elmira, NY

Contract Duration: 13 Weeks (03/23/2026 – 06/21/2026)

Shift: 2nd Shift (15:00 – 23:30) | 5x8-Hour Shifts

Seeking a resilient and experienced Psychiatric Registered Nurse for their Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit (BSU). This role is designed for a clinician with strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a therapeutic milieu during the active evening hours. You will be responsible for acute psychiatric care, medication administration, and crisis intervention, with the potential to float to the Inpatient Addiction Rehab Unit (ARU) as needed.

• Therapeutic Milieu Management: Oversee the safety and clinical flow of the unit during the 2nd shift, ensuring a stable environment for patients in acute psychiatric crisis.
• Charge Nurse Duties: Act as a competent Charge Nurse, delegating tasks to LPNs and mental health technicians while coordinating with the interdisciplinary team.
• Crisis De-escalation: Utilize advanced crisis management techniques (PMCS, TRUST, or PALS ) to manage aggressive or high-risk behaviors without the immediate presence of security on the unit.
• Patient Assessment: Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and monitor for side effects of psychotropic medications, including Extrapyramidal Symptoms (EPS).
• Documentation: Use Epic EMR to record behavioral observations, nursing interventions, and treatment plan progress.
• Addiction Care: Maintain flexibility to support the Inpatient Addiction Rehab Unit (ARU) with withdrawal management and recovery support.

• Experience: Minimum 2 years of dedicated Inpatient Psychiatric experience.
• Clinical Skills: Proven competence in Charge Nurse responsibilities and De-escalation/Crisis Management .
• Licensure: Active New York State RN License .
• Certifications: Current BLS (American Heart Association) required.
• Shift Expectations: Must work holidays and every other weekend. No block scheduling ; weekends off cannot be approved unless coverage is secured.
• Personal Attributes: Requires high resilience, clinical judgment, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced behavioral health setting.

• Department: BSU (6560) and potential float to ARU.
• Security: Present in the building but not stationed on the unit.
• Uniform: Navy blue scrubs.
