Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.
This includes executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting with examinations and treatment of patients.
The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents.
All technical and clinical procedures will be performed within the scope of education and licensure.
The RN attends sick calls with the physician to assess inmates/residents.
A list of inmates/residents to be examined will be prepared, and the examining room and equipment will be set up.
The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
Calls to Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders will be made as necessary.
The RN examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries.
Inmates/residents who become ill or injured will be referred to the emergency room or appropriate healthcare facility.
Emergency procedures will be performed as needed, and the Licensed Independent Provider will be notified for treatment orders.
The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel to address their needs.
Responsibilities include monitoring inpatient hospitalizations for early releases as appropriate.
The RN provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care delivered by other staff members.
Maintaining a good working relationship with facility staff and outside provider agencies is essential.
The RN utilizes established corporate and correctional policies in decision-making, applying sound judgment.
Regular evaluations of medical service provision will be conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services.
Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained at all times.
The RN assists in reviewing medical files to ensure all services provided are documented.
Close monitoring of potential catastrophic illnesses is required.
Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary will be conducted as directed.
Compliance with pharmacy laws, particularly those related to controlled substances, is essential.
Observations and recordings of inmate/resident behavior are part of the responsibilities.
The medical unit will be inspected for contraband items, and supplies will be securely stored or disposed of safely.
Health counseling and education will be provided on an individual or group basis as needed.
The RN assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of records, reports, and logs promptly.
Reading, analyzing, and interpreting medical and technical documents is expected.
There will be involvement in processing and responding to lawsuits, including attending court hearings when necessary.
Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and approved services is part of the role.
Reporting safety and accident incidents as required by policies and procedures will be undertaken.
Appropriate actions will be taken in cases of serious incidents or emergencies.
