Licensed Practical Nurse

The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the performance of basic nursing duties. This includes the execution of physician orders, operation of pill call, sick call, and assisting the physician in examinations and treatments. The nurse performs technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their license. They assist in the professional management of the medical department by applying appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of residents.

The nurse attends sick call with the physician to see residents and prepares a list of individuals to be examined. They prepare the examining room and equipment. The nurse operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures. They control medication, syringes, and other medical supplies or equipment and manage inventory as required by established procedures.

In emergency situations, the nurse performs appropriate procedures as needed. They keep equipment and work areas clean, utilizing appropriate sanitation methods. Documentation and reporting activities are conducted in accordance with established policies and procedures, including medical file documentation. The nurse assists supervisors in evaluating the provision of all medical services to prevent inappropriate duplication of those services. They maintain absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.

The nurse observes and records resident behavior and inspects the medical unit for contraband items. They securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment. The nurse assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records and reports. They ensure proper filing, alphabetizing, and labeling of documents. Reviewing reports and records produced during shifts is also part of their responsibilities.

The nurse reads, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures, as well as governmental regulations and legal documents. They respond via legal counsel to lawsuits and attend court hearings when necessary. The nurse conducts research of charts and reviews the status of residents with serious health problems for necessary interventions and treatments. Effective communication with administration, staff, residents, visitors, and the general public is essential, particularly in situations requiring tact, diplomacy, and good judgment.

The nurse helps evaluate and recommend physical safety requirements necessary for providing a safe working environment for both patients and staff. They facilitate accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved medical services. The nurse prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures. They take appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.

The nurse escorts or coordinates the movement of residents for medical treatment. They help initiate and complete investigations and inquiries by gathering information and evidence. The nurse interviews and obtains statements, exercising independent judgment to determine when probable cause exists for recommending or taking disciplinary action. Functions performed may include working in confined areas, rotating shifts, and physically verifying secure areas.

Nurses must be aware that verbal abuse may be present in an adversarial environment.
