Overview

Introduction:
The DNREC Division of Air Quality monitors and regulates emissions to the air. Air monitoring is supported by the Ambient Air Monitoring Program, a statewide network of monitoring stations that measure pollutants defined by national air quality standards to protect public health, welfare, and the environment. The Ambient Air Monitoring Program is supported by the Air Monitoring Quality Assurance Program, which ensures the quality of data produced.

Summary

Statement

The Environmental Scientist IV position is the Quality Assurance Coordinator (QAC) for the Division of Air Quality. The QAC leads the ambient air monitoring network quality assurance program, performs level‑3 validation, and submits air monitoring data to EPA’s national data system for final certification.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct field studies, inspections, and evaluations for compliance with permits and regulatory requirements; observe, collect, analyze, review, and interpret data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, regulation submissions, or literature, and make recommendations.
  • Perform statistical analysis of data.
  • Conduct technical reviews and make recommendations on permit applications or other regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare permits, technical reports, and enforcement case documents.
  • Respond to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local, and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.
Job Requirements
  • Possession of a Master’s degree or higher in life, physical, or applied science or related field, or a Bachelor’s degree with 4 years’ experience performing environmental scientist work.
  • One year of experience providing scientific subject matter expertise through publications, presentations, or professional organization service.
  • One year of experience in environmental or natural resources project management, including planning, development, implementation, management, and evaluation of projects.
  • Three years’ experience analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  • Three years’ experience interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
Conditions of Hire
