Overview

Summary Education Alternatives is seeking van drivers for the Elyria location. Van Drivers are paid hourly and are responsible for driving clients on an agency owned vehicle to and from our sites located throughout the greater Akron/Cleveland area and on field trips to various locations. This position is a part‑time hourly position, Monday through Friday. Ohio Department of Education Certification training will be provided by Education Alternatives.

Required testing, certificates and licenses, and clearances

  • Applicants must be at least 25 years old
  • Must hold a valid Ohio driver’s license
  • Must have a good driving record, as determined by the Ohio Department of Education
  • Must be able to pass a pre‑service physical and drug test
  • Must not have a criminal background that would disqualify applicant from working with children

  • SKILLS
    - Specific skill‑based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practice, administering first aid, applying pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws; operating agency vehicles, fire extinguisher, cell phone, and standard office equipment; and preparing and maintaining accurate records
  • KNOWLEDGE
    - Read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge‑based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include basic vehicle maintenance; first aid; health standards and hazards; cell phone communication; and utilizing wheelchairs, tie downs, child safety seats, lifts etc. (by assignment).
  • ABILITY
    - Specific ability‑based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups including school age riders; displaying tact and courtesy; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; exercising sound judgements; maintaining an understanding of the special needs of students and their parents; maintaining confidentiality; working as a part of a team; and working with constant distractions.

Working Conditions: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking and 10% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution to the situation
  • Be able to work with clients with emotional and behavioral disabilities and intervene when necessary for the purpose of ensuring order and safety
  • Assists clients and other passengers (e.g. seating, restraints, special equipment, etc.) for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from vehicles including both emergency situations and normal transport
  • Advises clients and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guidelines and maintaining passenger safety
