Position Summary
Sets up and operates various conventional and/or numerically controlled machining centers on the most complex and difficult jobs. Performs rework operations as needed to support the Operations and SSO Teams. Works from blueprints, sketches, planning sheets, verbal instructions, and/or engineering, tooling, or equipment information. Contributes to lean initiatives to increase productivity and reduce costs. Works independently with minimum guidance in a team environment.
Responsibilities- Runs multiple machines efficiently, including simultaneous operations.
- Adapts or improvises tooling to accomplish operations requiring broad knowledge of production machining technology.
- Utilizes CAD/CAM Software to create designs and program CNC equipment.
- Sets up, adjusts, and operates a variety of conventional and/or special purpose machines for diversified and difficult production operations with close tolerances.
- Interprets customer requirements from blueprints, complex drawings, engineering specifications, quality directives, charts, tables, sketches, and verbal instructions.
- Interfaces with engineering to resolve drawing errors, suggest design changes, and solve product/process problems.
- Implements manufacturing methods using standard production machines, materials, and tooling, and assists with tooling design.
- Makes complex setups, including multiple workpiece stations, using custom and standard holding devices.
- Develops and defines processes with limited documentation as required.
- Troubleshoots and resolves machining problems.
- Responsible for machining and checking parts to maintain high quality and efficiency.
- Inspects finished parts for conformance via visual examination and precision measuring instruments such as gages, calipers, micrometers, comparators, surface plates, and may use CMM.
- Ensures equipment is calibrated according to schedule.
- Maintains equipment cleanliness, accuracy, and reliability specific to division requirements.
- Accurately performs statistical process control (SPC) as required.
- Uses advanced shop mathematics including trigonometry and metalworking fundamentals.
- Actively contributes to lean initiatives by identifying and suggesting improvement opportunities.
- Provides guidance or assistance in coordinating workload priorities based on business demand.
- Observes all company policies, procedures, and safety rules, maintaining a clean and orderly work area.
- Trains and mentors less experienced team members.
- Performs other related responsibilities as requested.
- Five or more years of directly related machining experience in a high‑technology manufacturing environment and ability to work with minimal supervisory guidance.
- Proficient in CAD Software and in designing intricate holding fixtures required to complete tooling and/or rework.
- Proficient in CAM Software and can create CNC programs to produce holding fixtures, tooling, and/or rework.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks with changing priorities to meet customer needs.
- May require specialized certification specific to division requirements (e.g., Journeyman Machinist).
- Proficient at reading, understanding, and following blueprints, complex drawings, engineering specifications, and informal written or verbal instructions.
- Capable of making and evaluating precise machine setups.
- Working knowledge of advanced shop mathematics, including trigonometry.
- Ability to implement lean initiatives.
- Demonstrates effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, and ability to work in a team environment on research and solution development.
- Possesses effective mentoring and training skills and can serve as a resource to other team members.
- Interprets reports and uses job-specific software applications, and can use employee self‑service systems for online information and specialized automated systems such as PMR, TORS, e‑mail.
- Demonstrates team member competencies and participates in goal setting, performance feedback, and self‑development activities.
