Association for Energy Affordability, Inc. (AEA) – Hybrid work; present in the Emeryville office one day per week, with travel within California as requested.
Salary: $60,000 – $90,000 per year. Position Level: Experienced.

AEA is a rapidly growing national nonprofit that provides energy services and training to reduce the carbon impact of the built environment while fostering affordable, healthy housing and communities.
Position SummaryThe Project Associate will conduct energy audits, modeling, and support complex retrofit projects for multifamily and commercial buildings. The role involves field data collection, building diagnostics, construction feasibility, energy modeling, and report production.
Responsibilities- Conduct energy audits and in‑field assessments, including diagnostics and data collection.
- Perform energy modeling and building simulations.
- Prepare energy and green building assessment reports with equipment specifications and cost & emissions analysis.
- Job costing, construction feasibility, and contractor bid walks.
- Work with building owners, architects, and other decision makers to incorporate energy efficiency, electrification, and renewable upgrades.
- Attend construction site visits to inspect in‑progress and completed work.
- Perform LEED, Green Point Rated, and HERS consulting services.
- Conduct commissioning and retro‑commissioning studies.
- Provide internal and public training on energy efficiency technologies, auditing principles, and decarbonized building operations.
- Contribute to national projects that develop industry standards and guidelines.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, building science, or energy conservation (preferred) or an associate degree with relevant experience.
- At least one year of prior experience in a related energy audit or retrofit role.
- Excellent communication, organization, presentation, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and collaboration platforms such as Slack and Teams.
- Knowledge of mechanical systems, lighting technologies, and building envelope.
- Basic understanding of CA Title 24 and related building codes.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal energy incentive and rebate programs.
- Experience managing construction, retrofit, and/or solar projects.
- Capability to perform cost‑saving and fuel data analyses.
- HERS/HERS II rater certification and BPI certification preferred.
- Experience with energy modeling software (Energy Pro, CBECC‑Com &‑Res, Energy Plus, CSE).
- Legal eligibility to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
- Sound technical writing skills.
- Experience with LEED, Green Point Rated, and HERS consulting.
