Mechanical Engineering Group Lead

At IPS, we are global leaders in developing innovative solutions for the consulting, architecture, engineering, project controls, procurement, construction management, and CQV of technically complex facilities, primarily in the life sciences industry. We're looking for an experienced, innovative Mechanical Engineering Group Lead to join our growing Emeryville, CA office. You'll lead and grow a small team of mechanical engineers who design life-changing facilities.

The ability to mentor others is crucial, as you'll work to develop and retain this talented team.

As an experienced mechanical engineer, you'll work independently on various projects concurrently as assigned by a Project Manager. You may oversee aspects of or the entire HVAC/Utilities design process, or assist as a technical expert on a specialized design. Primary responsibilities will include writing scopes of work for mechanical designs (HVAC/Utilities) based on preliminary review and client meetings, preparing engineering studies and schematic design for new HVAC/Utilities systems, and analyzing the operation of existing systems.

We'll rely on you to assess the requirements of a project, break it into tasks, and work with Project Managers to determine the scope of work, budget, and staffing. You'll regularly review mechanical progress and alert the PM to any changes in scope. Maintaining quality in accordance with the company's production and design standards is critical.

Based in Emeryville, CA, you'll work with the Regional Director of Design and the HR team to recruit and retain talent and develop staffing plans to meet the business plan. You'll also oversee manpower planning to ensure efficient assignment of resources on multiple, concurrent projects. Your team of engineers will be excited to learn from you as you enthusiastically share your knowledge and provide them with training and career development opportunities.

Knowledge of local codes and industry standard equipment, and the ability to specify it for proper applications, is important. You'll also prepare estimates, review contractor applications for payments, review construction budgets, and coordinate document completion. You'll regularly connect with clients to ensure satisfaction and build relationships.

The salary offered for this role is between $159,150 and $244,050, but the actual salary offered is dependent on experience, skill set, and education.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's of Engineering Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university
  • 10+ years of professional engineering experience in mechanical design, including HVAC and utilities
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Life Sciences, or Laboratory industry experience is preferred but not required.

Context, Environment, & Safety

  • Travel duration, if any, is based on project location.
  • This position is a safety-sensitive position.
  • The employee is designated for field work and attends activities at client sites where they work in construction, process, packaging, manufacturing, research, or other "non-administrative" areas.
