In-School Suspension (ISS) and Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) Program Building Substitute

The Building Substitute assigned to the In-School Suspension (ISS) and Out-of-School Suspension (OSS) program provides academic and behavioral support to students assigned disciplinary consequences. This position is responsible for maintaining a structured, supportive environment that promotes accountability, reflection, and continued academic progress. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with administrators and school staff to implement restorative practices and support students in successfully reintegrating into the school community.

Education and Experience:

Must have a valid teaching certificate, which can include a Guest Teacher Emergency Certificate, Type 06 - No educational obligation. Experience working with adolescents in educational, counseling, social service, or youth-serving settings and knowledge of restorative practices, behavior management strategies, and trauma-informed approaches are preferred. Other equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supervise students assigned to ISS and OSS programming and maintain a safe, structured, and respectful learning environment.
• Build positive relationships with students while maintaining clear expectations and boundaries.
• Document student attendance, assignment completion, and participation in restorative activities.
• Assist students in accessing, understanding, and completing academic assignments provided by classroom teachers to ensure continuity of learning during disciplinary placements.
• Communicate with teachers regarding assignment completion and student needs.
• Encourage student engagement and productive use of instructional time.
• Facilitate student reflection activities related to behavioral incidents and school expectations.
• Support the implementation of restorative practices, including restorative conversations, reflection activities, and re-entry planning.
• Help students develop self-regulation, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Communicate professionally and effectively with students, families, staff, and administration.
• Continue to assist with high school building and district-wide substitute coverage, supervision, and student support responsibilities during times when ISS/OSS programming is not scheduled.
• Perform other duties as assigned by building and district administrators.
