The Position
The Pacific View Arts Camp Recreation Leader II has the responsibility of taking a lead role in activity creation and art instruction at Camp and gives direction to Campers daily, under the supervision of the Camp directors. The City of Encinitas Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department provides the Visual Arts Camp at Pacific View Arts Center which offers art instruction in a fun and creative environment for 6–12-year-olds.
Camp days are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. from June 15 to August
7. Arts activities are based on weekly themes and encompass a variety of techniques and mediums:
Painting, sewing, collage, drawing, sculpting, etc.
The arts instructors and staff will manage classrooms, supervise campers, and lead the day’s arts activities. Arts instructors will be under the supervision of camp directors.
General Duties- Work alongside another instructor to teach arts and crafts activities according to the theme of each week
- Serve as mentor and role model for campers and CITs (Counselors in training)
- Adapt lesson instructions to fit the varied needs and abilities of campers
- Assist with the setup, breakdown, and cleaning of the arts classrooms before and after each activity
- Use positive discipline and communicate effectively with campers and other instructors
- Supervise campers during lunchtime, ensuring safe play
- Coordinate with Camp Directors and other instructors to adhere to activity rotation schedule and site logistics to ensure safe and efficient operations of camp
- Classroom management
- Basic art techniques (painting, drawing, sculpting)
- Instructional techniques
- Record keeping (attendance)
- Objectives of recreational principles
- Providing customer service
- Maintaining a safe, welcoming, and calm classroom environment
- Creating a fun, creative space for campers while upholding the highest standard of professionalism
- Taking attendance and keeping track of campers
- Adapting lesson plans to fit the needs of all students in classroom
- Performing multiple tasks simultaneously
- Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with people of all ages, including campers, other instructors, supervisors, parents, the general public, etc.
- Ensuring child safety inside and outside of the classroom
One to two (1-2) years of experience in customer service or youth recreation, preferably in a summer camp setting. Experience in/passion for the arts and arts education is a plus. High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Applicants must be 18 years or older by the start of camp (June 15, 2026).
Licensing Requirements- Valid California Driver’s License
- Some positions may require a CPR, First Aid, and AED or Food Handler’s Certification
