Parish Pianist​/Organist

Parish Pianist Position

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, located at 1001 Encinitas Blvd, Encinitas, CA 92024, is seeking a part-time parish pianist who reports to the Music Director. The employment type is part-time (6 - 10 hours/week) with a non-exempt, hourly pay rate of $35/hr. – $40/hr.

The parish pianist will assist in leading the faithful in full and active participation in the sacred music of the liturgy. This position requires working weekends and evenings, including regular schedule of 2 Sunday Masses, special Masses throughout the year, and regular rehearsals with the choir (~1x a week).

Primary responsibilities include:

• Participates in worship space planning requirements
• Make a minimum of 1x choir practice a week
• Have strong sight-reading skills
• Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of sound system and media display
• Acts as sound technician/sound engineer as needed
• Serves as a resource to staff in selecting music and planning liturgies and prayer services
• Invites, encourages, and enhances assembly participation in the sung liturgy; assures ongoing expansion of the parish music repertoire
• Awareness of liturgical elements / order of the Holy Mass
• Enthusiasm for sacred music / serving in liturgical ministry
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements include:

• Ability to work flexible hours
• Good communication skills
• Friendly with excellent people and communication skills
• High degree of proficiency with a piano capable of providing musical leadership during liturgies
• Applicants should excel in sight reading, thorough knowledge of playing the organ/piano, and be comfortable with both homophonic and polyphonic music
• Active member of a Catholic faith community
• Thorough knowledge and familiarity with the organizational structure and practices of the Roman Catholic Church

Education and experience:

• Minimum 2 years' experience in liturgical music
• Performance skills for organ, piano

Physical demands include:

The employee regularly performs in the sanctuary/choir area of the main church building. Appropriate manners and dress are required. The employee is required to be mobile to, from, and within the office, as well as maneuver throughout the Saint John the Evangelist facility to attend meetings, briefings, and other work-related events. The employee may be required to conduct trips to, from, and within various city and county-wide locations to attend meetings or events.

The employee must be able to climb stairs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
