Position: Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) (40 Hour)

Overview

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems.

Responsibilities
  • Perform highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard HVACR trade practices and codes on air systems used for heating, ventilating and refrigeration.
  • Operate, maintain, repair, install, modify and assemble air‑conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems, including those that use freon or chilled water for air cooling and air or water for condenser means.
  • Determine required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas and use and interpret a psychometric chart.
  • Control and measure airflow, room air changes and room pressurizing; monitor computerized control systems.
  • Perform minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks; add water‑treatment chemicals to boilers.
  • Make estimates of time and personnel, and obtain required materials for assigned tasks.
  • Keep necessary records of work performed.
  • In smaller trade areas, serve as sole worker running a skilled trade area.
  • Perform duties related to similar trade areas as required.
  • Install, modify, repair and assemble electrical or pneumatic controls for this type of equipment.
  • Inspect and repair steam traps fed by the main system at various locations.
  • Remove pipe insulation materials associated with repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA‑approved methods.
  • Act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.
  • Operate heavy equipment and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state‑owned airports.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and HVACR trade practices.
  • Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
  • Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade.
Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trades.
  • For state employees, this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.
Substitutions Allowed
  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
  • Completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
  • Experience performing technical duties within the HVACR trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Special Requirements
  • University of Connecticut incumbents must possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications, including a State of Connecticut heating, piping, and/or cooling license.
