this Role
PAR Electrical Contractors, LLC is seeking skilled and safety-driven Relay Technicians to support our transmission, distribution, and substation projects. Relay Technicians play a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of electrical power systems by installing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining protective relay systems and associated control equipment.
This position works closely with engineering, commissioning teams, field crews, and clients to ensure that protective systems are functioning properly and meet all operational, safety, and regulatory standards. Salary Range for this role will be $38 to $45 per hour based on experience.
What You'll DoInstallation & Testing- Install, test, commission, and maintain protective relays and control systems in substations and electrical facilities.
- Perform functional testing of microprocessor-based and electromechanical relays.
- Conduct relay calibration, settings verification, and protection scheme testing.
- Perform end-to-end testing of protection and control circuits.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot relay malfunctions and system issues.
- Perform routine maintenance and corrective actions on relay systems.
- Analyze test results and recommend corrective measures as needed.
- Respond to outages or emergency service calls when required.
- Review and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection drawings.
- Document test procedures, results, and commissioning reports.
- Ensure compliance with NERC, OSHA, and company safety standards.
- Maintain accurate records of relay settings and system configurations.
- Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and field crews.
- Support system energization and commissioning activities.
- Participate in safety briefings and job hazard analyses.
- Travel to project sites as required.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (Technical training or Associate’s degree preferred).
- 3+ years of experience in relay testing, commissioning, or substation protection systems.
- Strong understanding of power system protection principles.
- Experience with microprocessor-based relays (SEL, GE, ABB, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Knowledge of safety standards in energized environments.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel.
- NETA certification (Level II, III, or IV preferred).
- Experience with transmission and distribution substations.
- Familiarity with NERC compliance standards.
- Experience with commissioning new substations or system upgrades.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Analytical problem-solving skills in high-voltage environments.
- Ability to work independently in field conditions.
- Clear communication skills for coordination with engineering and operations teams.
- High level of accountability and professionalism.
- Field-based work in active substations and outdoor environments.
- Exposure to energized equipment and high-voltage systems.
- Travel required based on project assignments.
- May require extended hours during commissioning or outage windows.
