Value Engineer - Strategic Sourcing
Brooks is a prominent leader in the semiconductor industry, known for our innovative technology and sustainable solutions. As part of our strategic expansion in Malaysia, we are seeking an experienced Value Engineer to support the Sourcing group in strategic global sourcing initiatives.
The Value Engineer acts as the technical and cost engineering expert within the sourcing team, responsible for driving cost optimization, improving product value, and supporting supplier and component decisions through data driven engineering analysis. This role partners closely with Sourcing, Engineering, Quality, and Operations to identify cost down opportunities, redesign components for manufacturability, evaluate supplier capabilities, and ensure optimal total cost of ownership (TCO) for purchased materials.
Work Location:
Onsite – Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform component teardowns, cost breakdowns, and should-cost analysis to identify savings.
- Analyze product designs and propose alternative materials, manufacturing methods, or specifications to reduce cost.
- Work with engineering and suppliers on value engineering (VE) and value analysis (VA) activities.
- Develop cost models for key commodities based on process steps, tooling, equipment, and labor.
Technical Support to Sourcing:
- Provide technical validation during supplier selection, bid evaluations, and quotation reviews.
- Review supplier cost quotations for accuracy, feasibility, and alignment with engineering requirements.
- Support sourcing teams with design-to-cost analysis for new and existing parts.
- Participate in make versus buy studies, supplier transitions, or dual sourcing initiatives.
Supplier Collaboration & Capability Assessment:
- Conduct technical assessments of supplier manufacturing processes (e.g. sheet metal, machining, stamping, plastics, electronics).
- Work with suppliers to identify process improvements that reduce cost or increase quality.
- Support root-cause investigations for supplier quality and cost issues.
- Drive supplier workshops for cost reduction and manufacturability improvements.
New Product Introduction (NPI) Support:
- Collaborate with R&D/Engineering to influence early design decisions for better cost and manufacturability.
- Provide cost estimates and technical feasibility input during early concept and prototype stages.
- Ensure new components meet performance requirements while achieving cost targets.
Data & Analysis:
- Maintain cost models, benchmark data, material indices, and commodity cost trends.
- Utilize cost methodologies, tools, appropriate software models, and packages to prepare and maintain reliable and accurate data.
- Analyze cost drivers and identify opportunities for cost optimization across the product lifecycle.
- Support the sourcing team in preparing business cases, make-cost analyses, and supplier cost comparisons.
- Gather proposals, specifications, and other related documents from design engineering to convert specifications to cost estimates for new and current products.
- Any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related technical field.
Experience:
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in value engineering, manufacturing engineering, cost engineering, or supplier development.
- Experience in manufacturing processes such as machining, plastics, die cast, stamping, electronics, or assembly.
- Familiarity with procurement processes and supplier management is an advantage.
Skills:
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and cost drivers.
- Ability to perform should-cost modelling and component teardown analysis.
- Knowledge and experience in AI tools (i.e. aPriori, Luminovo or similar) is a pre-requisite.
- Good technical drawing interpretation (GD&T knowledge preferred).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
