POSITION SUMMARY

The SPR Analytical Chemist I/II supports the success of South Platte Renew as part of the Environmental Programs Team, providing analytical services and special studies related to advanced wastewater treatment, nutrient management, biosolids recycling, and environmental pollutant minimization. The role requires advanced scientific knowledge and the application of professional judgment and discretion.

The Analytical Chemist I performs bacteriological, chemical, and physical testing on wastewater and surface water samples using wet chemistry methods and advanced laboratory instrumentation. Analyses include metals, organic chemicals, and other constituents to evaluate treatment plant performance. Responsibilities include preparing chemicals, solutions, and reagents; analyzing laboratory data; and maintaining compliance with EPA and CDPHE regulations.

The Analytical Chemist II performs all Chemist I duties and assumes additional responsibilities including chemical and supply ordering, LIMS administration, quality assurance/quality control, document management, project management for special studies, and data review.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Laboratory Services Manager

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Analytical Chemist I
  • Conduct bacteriological, physical, wet chemistry, and metals analyses using standard laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
  • Record, analyze, and interpret test results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Diagnose data issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain inventory, calibration, and maintenance records.
  • Calibrate, clean, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment; communicate repair needs.
  • Maintain compliance with EPA, CDPHE, and NPDES permit requirements.
  • Support continuous program improvement and collaborate across teams.
  • Follow plant-wide safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Analytical Chemist II
  • Perform all Analytical Chemist I responsibilities.
  • Conduct peer review of laboratory data.
  • Maintain and update Quality Assurance and Safety Manuals.
  • Oversee chain-of-custody procedures and LIMS sample maintenance.
  • Manage special studies and pilot projects, including scheduling, tracking, and reporting.
  • Monitor and order laboratory chemicals and supplies.
  • Coordinate subcontract laboratory services and enter external results into LIMS.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Analytical Chemist I Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Science, or related field with 3 years of laboratory experience; or
  • Master’s degree with 1 year of relevant experience.
Skills
  • Data analysis and interpretation, advanced mathematics, technical writing, and proficiency with MS Office and laboratory software.
Certifications
  • RM Water Quality Analysts Association certification preferred.
Analytical Chemist II
  • Meets all Chemist I requirements plus additional years of experience (5 years with Bachelor’s; 3 years with Master’s).
Driver’s License
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license with acceptable MVR.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of chemistry, biology, mathematics, and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations, QA/QC practices, and chain-of-custody procedures.
  • Strong analytical, computer, and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and work safely around hazardous equipment and confined spaces.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily office-based with some fieldwork. Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, odors, and uneven surfaces may occur.

SALARY RANGE
  • Analytical Chemist I: $66,744 – $100,116 annually
  • Analytical Chemist II: $79,928 – $119,892 annually
