Job Summary

Foreman and Civil Superintendent. FLSA:
No Exempt.
Pipe layers are responsible for assisting the utility crew’s foreman, topman, and operators with installing new or modifying existing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water utilities. Pipe layers will work in excavated trenches on a daily basis, assist with pipe/transit lasers and shooting grade, assemble different fittings, ensure pipe is installed at the correct elevation/slope, fine grade pipe bedding in the trench, and assist with backfill using jumping jacks/plate compactors.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist in laying new or modifying existing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water utilities.
- Work safely in trenches and confined spaces installing or modifying utilities—proper shoring, excavations, and confined space equipment provided by JHL.
- Use small tools (impact drills, hammer drills, core drills, demo saws, pipe wrenches, jumping jacks, plate compactors) to assemble utility fittings and perform miscellaneous tasks related to the utility scope of work.
- Assist in miscellaneous concrete work related to utilities (manhole bases, inlets, patching, core drilling, head walls, toe walls).
- Assist topman/foreman in shooting grade using transit/pipe lasers to obtain correct elevations and percent of fall for all utilities.
- Fine‑grade pipe bedding in trenches to achieve correct elevations and percent of fall for utility installations.
- Assist project crew with asphalt patching for utility installations in street cuts.
- Operate small equipment as needed (skid steers and trench compactors).
- Perform miscellaneous labor regarding the utility scope of work (prepare trench boxes, lay out materials, etc.).
- Wear proper PPE daily (hard hat, vest, safety glasses, closed‑toe boots); all PPE provided by JHL.
- Wear task‑specific PPE as required (face shield, chainsaw chaps, respirators, gloves, etc.).
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- 2‑4 years of experience laying sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water utilities.
- Experience using trench safety and shoring.
- Experience using small tools and equipment.
- Math skills related to shooting correct elevations and percentage of fall.
- Ability to read and understand survey staking.
Must remain in standing or kneeling position: 90% of work time.
Must speak, write, and comprehend English: 10% of work time.
Must lift tools and supplies up to 50 lbs: 40% of work time.
Must hear clearly: 100% of work time.
Must stoop, kneel, bend, and reach: 100% of work time.
Must have dexterity to manipulate tools and materials: 100% of work time.
Must have clear vision or wear contacts/glasses if vision is obscured: 100% of work time.
Total Compensation- Annual discretionary bonus—eligible for participation.
