Mentor Teacher Program
The Board of Education is seeking applications for the Mentor Teacher Program for the school year. Candidates will receive training to serve as mentors for newly hired teaching staff.
Qualifications:
- NJ Teacher Certification
- Minimum of three years of successful teaching
- Strong instructional background
- Successful implementation of the NJ Student Learning Standards
- Expertise in training and leadership development is desirable
- Experience working with at-risk students
- Adept interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with staff, students, and parents
- Must have a minimum rating of Effective
Description:
Candidates will commit to the roles and responsibilities of mentoring, accept the novice teacher as a developing person and professional, and reflect on interpersonal communications and decisions. They will dedicate time to meet with the novice teacher, persist in efforts to assist despite obstacles, maintain congruence between mentoring words and actions, attend meetings, training, or other professional development opportunities related to mentoring, model self-reflection and self-assessment as hallmarks of professionalism, endeavor to see the world from the novice teacher's point of view, anticipate the needs of the novice teacher by thinking like a novice teacher, understand the common problems and concerns of the novice teacher, apply theories of adult learning and development, model acceptance of diversity in others, reflect on what, where, when, and how to communicate with the novice teacher, adjust communication style to the developmental needs of the novice teacher, respect the confidentiality of the mentor-novice teacher relationship, self-disclose regarding one's own professional challenges, and model effective helping relationship skills.
They will serve as an instructional coach, model a commitment to personal and professional growth, communicate hope and optimism for the future, employ the clinical cycle of instructional support, value the role of shared experiences in the coaching process, engage the novice teacher in a professional learning community whenever possible, possess knowledge of effective teaching practices, model openness to new ideas and instructional practices, live the life of learner as well as teacher, engage the novice teacher as a fellow student of learning and teaching, pursue professional growth related to teaching and mentoring, advise the novice teacher on professional growth opportunities, encourage and praise the novice teacher, hold and communicate high expectations for the novice teacher, project a positive disposition toward the teaching profession, and avoid criticism of students, parents, and colleagues.
Mentor fees are deducted per pay cycle and paid at the end of the school year to the Mentor. Teachers holding a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) are responsible for paying a mentor fee of $550 for your services through payroll deductions. Teachers holding a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) are responsible for paying a mentor fee of $1,000 for your services.
Please be advised that the fees may be prorated if training was received in a prior district or in a prior school year within the District.
