Overview
At the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), the Highway Right of Way Designer III plays a key role in developing safe highway systems for the state. The position involves preparing right-of-way plans and land parcel descriptions necessary to acquire the right-of-way for building and maintaining state highways.
Job Duties- Prepare right-of-way plans for complex projects, including multiple tracts, existing rights-of-way, new and existing controlled access, railroads, and frontage roads.
- Use design software and coordinate geometry to generate plans and write parcel descriptions for land acquisition.
- Design new right-of-way and easement areas for acquisition.
- Archive projects, create condemnation plats, and add sell‑back information to plans.
- Attend department meetings pertaining to assigned projects.
- Maintain right-of-way plans, project files, CAD files, surveys, land title information, railroad maps, and city plats by updating the project information database.
- Input existing right-of-way information into the GIS system.
- Research project information, distribute copies to NDOT personnel and external partners such as private utility companies, county entities, NRDs, Corps of Engineers, and surveyors.
- Check right-of-way projects and land parcel descriptions for accuracy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Minimum Qualifications: High school education or equivalent; education or experience in drafting, engineering, highway construction, and/or right-of-way or roadway design.
- Preferred Qualifications: Experience with NDOT's Geode software, business processes, and systems; experience with land parcel descriptions or highway construction; understanding of engineering survey notes and reading highway construction plans; surveying coursework or experience; proficiency in PC word processing and spreadsheet programs.
- Valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
- Some overnight travel may be required.
- Regular and reliable attendance required.
- Mathematics: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and computer-aided drafting software.
- Organization, prioritization, and record keeping.
- Verbal and written communication, decision making, and project coordination.
- Ability to communicate with diverse professional and technical groups.
