Overview
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive patient care in an advanced practice setting, performing physical examinations, documenting findings, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and coordinating care within inter‑professional teams. The NP also leads clinic operations, education, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities- Obtain patient histories and perform complete physical examinations.
- Document findings, order and interpret diagnostic laboratory tests.
- Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, and wound care.
- Develop and implement short‑ and long‑term treatment plans.
- Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, subject to physician collaborative protocol.
- Initiate consultations, monitor scheduling of special tests, and communicate changes that may affect patient care.
- Provide patient and family education on preventive care and treatment regimens.
- Serve as liaison with government agencies (e.g., CDC, NIH) and manage research projects in accordance with IRB approval.
- Assist with quality assurance, safety, infection control, and compliance with accreditation and regulatory agencies.
- Participate in in‑service education and professional associations.
- Manage clinic clinical aspects, patient rounding, nursing performance improvement, staffing, scheduling, and training of new employees and preceptors.
- Lead direct and indirect patient care, support of systems, research, education, and professional leadership.
- Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited school.
- Minimum five (5) years of combined education and clinical experience; less than two (2) years requires at least 2,000 clinical hours and a protocol for prescribing controlled substances.
- Excellent communication skills in spoken, written, and reading English.
- Knowledge of medical procedures, conditions, and the ability to follow and perform clinical duties effectively.
- Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Nurse Practitioner (NP) license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Nurse Practitioner Furnisher (NP Furnisher) license issued by the California Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA).
- DEA Certificate for prescribing Schedule II–V controlled substances.
- National Board Certification in the NP’s area of specialty (ABSNC or NCCA).
- Agricultural Certified Nurse Practitioner (for acute care settings) – American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Critical‑Care Nurses (AACN) credential.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certificates from the American Heart Association.
