Career Overview

Embark on a fulfilling career at BNSF Railway. Joining our Engineering Department means contributing to the backbone of our nation's rail infrastructure. As a member of the Track Maintenance Team, you will play a vital role in constructing, inspecting, repairing tracks and other railroad assets and maintaining our railway corridors. This is a full‑time (40 hrs/wk) position subject to on‑call, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Travel is required to job sites for extended periods, sometimes for days or weeks at a time, in the designated seniority region.

Residency Requirement
  • Maintain residency within the hired district or within 50 miles of a designated BNSF depot serving that district.
  • Notify and obtain written approval from BNSF before any change of residence outside of the hired district.
  • Failure to comply may result in loss of travel pay benefits, repayment of previously paid travel expenses, or impact to employment status.
Training

Company‑paid on‑the‑job and classroom training, including travel to the BNSF Training Center. FRA Tier II Qualification.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lifting and carrying track material and assisting in track maintenance.
  • Operating 26K+ lb trucks safely and efficiently, ensuring proper truck and equipment maintenance, scheduling regular service, and maintaining records.
  • Welding, grinding, and cutting rail, learning and following BNSF welding procedures, maintaining records and timesheets, and taking proper precautions to reduce fire risks.
  • Working in a safety‑sensitive environment with diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, sleet), uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications
  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization.
  • 21 years of age or older.
  • Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
  • Able to work safely in the specified working conditions.
  • Able to work the above shift/hours.
  • Able to meet the travel requirements.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate English.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs occasionally.
  • Possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the required endorsements for combination vehicle, air brake, and HAZMAT, or ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
  • Able to visually distinguish red, blue, green, yellow, and clear light colors.
  • Ability to discriminate and differentiate between verbal and non‑verbal sounds in the work environment.
  • Able to use hands and hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling.
  • Occasional climbing on/off equipment.
  • Able to bend, walk, stand and sit for extended time.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures; wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain residency within the hired district or within 50 miles of a designated BNSF depot serving that district.
Union Information

Union membership is with the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (BMWE). Union dues are required per union agreement. Seniority district transfers are handled per union agreement, are seniority based, and require Director approval.
