SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Ephrata Area School District, 803 Oak Blvd., Ephrata, PA, is recruiting for the position of a Secondary School Counselor starting April 2026. The Middle School Guidance Counselor implements the district's comprehensive counseling program for middle school level children. They consult with and assist teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students. They protect the confidentiality of student records and provide appropriate support to the middle school educational programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Includes but is not limited to:

* Present information to students in their classrooms relative to the guidance curriculum.

* Orient new students to school procedures and schools' varied opportunities for learning. Notify the Coordinator of Student Support Services of newly enrolled students with IEP's. Fax special education paperwork to Coordinator of Student Support Services to confirm student placement.

* Assist students to develop a positive self-image through efforts to improve their self-understanding, self-direction, and skills in problem solving and decision-making.

* Provide individual or small group counseling for students in the areas of personal/social, and/or educational/academic.

* Involve parents in ways that help them understand the educational, career, personal, and social development of their children. Counsel and support students and their families facing emergency situations, and make appropriate outside referrals.

* Participate in the intervention team process or school support team.

* Assist students in developing immediate and long-range plans by analyzing and evaluating students' abilities, interests, skills, and achievement.

* Coordinate and assist with student activities such as assessment schedules, fire drills, school pictures, assemblies, transition from elementary school, and transition to high school.

* Coordinate requests for homebound instruction and students placed in residential treatment facilities.

* Monitor academic progress of students in alternative school programs and facilitate transition back to middle school.

* Assist in the collection and maintenance of pertinent student data and maintain student confidentiality. Serve as the LEA, upon request of building principal, at student IEP meetings.

* Promote positive working relationships with students, staff, and members of the community. Conduct or coordinate presentations and/or seminars to provide information as needed or requested.

* Keep current on financial aide, community agencies, drug and alcohol issues (middle school teenage culture), counseling trends, and mental health issues. Maintain licensure at the state and/or national level; assume responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.

* Follow federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies regarding children's educational welfare.

* Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Building Principal.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILL REQUIREMENT

Education:

Master's Degree

Certification:
Pennsylvania Certification School Counselor

Experience:

Three years classroom experience preferred. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Language

Skills:

Ability to evaluate, interpret and analyze. Should have strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write reports, and effectively present information to parents and administrators.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts, math reasoning, and math logic.

Reasoning

Skills:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Other Skills & Abilities:
Proficient computer and software skills are required. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with tact and diplomacy. Ability to prioritize a wide variety of diverse situations and changing priorities. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Educational policies. Exhibit sound judgment.
