Position SummaryBuilding Maintenance Worker is a bargaining unit employee under the direction of a foreman, supervisor, or other designated management employee, responsible for construction, maintenance and operation of District facilities. The position utilizes trade skills (carpentry, masonry, plumbing, etc.) and requires passing a NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) security background check along with CIP security training for access to protected areas.
Essential Functions- Operate District vehicles, including GCPUD required fleet vehicles, trucks, tractors, pickups, utility terrain vehicles and all‑terrain vehicles.
- Work independently, be self‑motivated and exercise sound judgment while maintaining, improving, remodeling or constructing District facilities.
- Demonstrate positive support for and implementation of District decisions.
- Maintain an attitude that welcomes change, seeks ways to improve the work environment and enhances service to other departments.
- Promote teamwork, a safe work environment, and adherence to District policies, procedures and safety rules.
- Cooperate with supervisors, foremen, and other personnel to ensure facilities are maintained or improved and projects completed.
- Accomplish all building craft work at the journeyman level—including carpentry, plumbing, concrete, glazing, interior and exterior finishes, roof work, minor electrical repairs, grounds‑keeping, irrigation installation and repair, and other tasks required to maintain District facilities.
- Specify, estimate and select material requirements.
- Read and update facility drawings and specifications.
- Establish safe construction work areas and shop practices.
- Guide, direct and train Facilities Servicemen, student helpers, and contractors as instructed.
- Perform finish carpentry, cabinet making, and advanced carpentry and plumbing.
- Assist in completing key lock design, installation and repairs.
- Layout, specify and order materials for remodel and addition work.
- May be assigned Facilities Serviceman work.
- Actively participate in all aspects of the safety program, including following all safety policies and procedures, alerting supervisors and coworkers to unsafe or hazardous conditions, reporting safety incidents or close calls within 24 hours, and accepting feedback on safety performance.
- High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
- Valid driver’s license with no driving restrictions.
- Current first‑aid card including CPR training equivalent to Washington State requirements for industrial first aid or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
- Experience maintaining and managing key control systems, including lock installation, rekeying and general access control functions.
- Current Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Public Operator Pesticide License in the Rights‑of‑Way Weed Category and in other categories required by the District (e.g., aquatic pest control, PCO general, ornamental weed, agricultural weed) or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
- Five years of established experience performing a broad range of building maintenance and construction work—carpentry, concrete, roofing, sheet metal, door and window systems, glazing, painting, flooring repair, plumbing fixture installation and repair, caulking, weather sealing, and grounds maintenance.
- Ability to pass and continuously maintain eligibility under a NERC CIP security background check and complete all required CIP security training for access to and work within CIP‑protected areas.
