Faculty Positions in The Department of Physiology and The Cardiovascular Institute
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Jul 01, 2026
at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
The Department of Physiology and the Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seek candidates for several Assistant Professor positions in the tenure track. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree. We are seeking candidates with significant postdoctoral training or similar experience.
The position comes with a competitive start-up package and lab space, protected time for the establishment of an independent research program and mentoring by supportive faculty in the Physiology Department and CVI.
Teaching responsibilities may include graduate and medical student instruction and training graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Research or scholarship responsibilities include developing a successful, extramurally supported research program. We seek investigators with demonstrated excellence in research grounded in fundamental mechanistic investigation that leverages molecular, biophysical, cellular and/or organismal insights to inform physiological or pathological processes in the cardiovascular system, particularly those emphasizing emerging areas, novel technologies, and interdisciplinary areas. Areas of interest include but are not limited to mitochondrial biology, cardiovascular metabolism, mechanotransduction, calcium signaling, vascular biology, cardiovascular-related interorgan communication, and gene regulation;
research excellence will be weighed more strongly than specific research interests.
In addition to the world-class facilities available at the University, the Department of Physiology and CVI are supported by extensive shared resources, including Super-Resolution Imaging, Muscle Physiology and Mechanics, Small Animal Cardiovascular Phenotyping, and Metabolomics Cores. The ideal candidate will have a vision for leveraging the rich, uniquely collaborative, environment at the University of Pennsylvania to tackle fundamental questions in cardiovascular biology.
The Perelman School of Medicine, one of the top ranked medical schools in the country for NIH funding, offers access to state-of-the-art core facilities and opportunities for appointments in numerous additional institutes and centers. Retention and success of junior faculty is at the core of our mission, and multiple support programs and career development opportunities are provided. The School of Medicine is integrated within the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, a world-class institution with an easily walkable campus located near central Philadelphia.
