Talen Energy is soliciting candidates for the position of Civil Engineer at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station near Berwick, Pennsylvania. The station is one of the largest dual‑unit boiling water reactor sites in the United States and delivers approximately 2700 MW of electricity to the grid in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Job SummaryUnder general direction, the successful candidate will be responsible for engineering activities associated with civil/structural projects at the station. The role requires independent work, minimal guidance, and the ability to provide guidance to other Talen Energy employees in delivering high‑quality, timely, and cost‑effective engineering solutions.
Primary Responsibilities- Provide in‑depth technical expertise to develop, manage and implement engineering analysis, activities and programs.
- Offer technical expertise and consultation to identify and resolve equipment and system problems.
- Use existing procedures to investigate, evaluate, and assist in producing technically correct and cost‑effective designs or recommendations that solve ongoing problems.
- Interface directly with other work groups (e.g., Operations, Maintenance) and station leadership regarding plant issues and improvement initiatives.
- Build relationships that facilitate knowledge transfer and cross‑functional collaboration.
- Assist with developing procedures, improving design recommendations and new equipment purchase recommendations.
- Lead multi‑discipline teams as the Lead Responsible Engineer for plant design changes.
- Prepare and review design change packages and design calculations in accordance with plant procedures.
- Provide support for outages, emergent issues and generation challenges, which may require shift work or off‑hours.
- Participate in the Emergency Response Organization and perform other duties assigned by the Civil/Structural Design Engineering Branch Manager.
- Inspect structures, systems, and components in the industrial areas of the nuclear power plant.
- Minimum of five years related civil or structural engineering experience in a nuclear or relevant industry.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Must meet nuclear unescorted plant access requirements.
- Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania, or a licensed PE in another state with the ability to obtain Pennsylvania licensing within one year of hire.
- Knowledge of AISC and ACI design codes, NRC requirements for safety‑related structures, seismic/dynamic qualification programs, heavy load programs, tornado‑generated missile impact considerations, rigging evaluations, and temporary shielding evaluations.
- Familiarity with civil/structural design requirements for nuclear power plants.
- Experience with industry standard design process qualification.
