UPMC Hamot's 6 South Unit is seeking a Casual Professional Staff Nurse to join our exceptional team!
6 South is a 43-bed Cardiovascular, Renal Transplant, and Surgical Specialty Acute Care Unit that provides comprehensive care to a diverse patient population. Nurses on this unit care for patients recovering from complex cardiothoracic, vascular, and bariatric surgeries, as well as kidney transplant and hepatobiliary procedures. The unit also specializes in telemetry monitoring, oxygen therapy management, and post-operative care, offering nurses the opportunity to develop a broad clinical skillset while working alongside a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team.
Title and salary will be determined based on education and experience.
The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and member of the care delivery team responsible for establishing and maintaining standards for the quality of patient care. This role provides direct patient care through the application of the nursing process, critical thinking, collaboration, and independent clinical judgment. The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates leadership and accountability while partnering with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to achieve optimal outcomes across the continuum of care.
Responsibilities- Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment and deliver patient-centered care.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates individualized plans of care that address clinical, social, psychological, safety, and spiritual needs.
- Utilizes critical thinking and sound clinical judgment to assess patient conditions and make informed care decisions.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care and promote quality outcomes.
- Maintains accurate, timely, and comprehensive patient documentation to support continuity of care.
- Incorporates organizational goals, regulatory standards, and evidence-based practices to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
- Creates a compassionate and supportive patient experience by building meaningful relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Demonstrates accountability for professional growth and ongoing competency development.
- Participates in unit-based shared governance activities, goal setting, and initiatives that support quality improvement and practice excellence.
- Serves as an engaged and collaborative member of the healthcare team, supporting colleagues and fostering a culture of teamwork.
- Actively participates in quality improvement efforts and identifies opportunities to enhance patient care and operational effectiveness.

- The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
- Minimum 1 year of experience.
