THE POSITION

The Allegheny County Maintenance Organization, part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, is on the lookout for enthusiastic individuals to take on the role of Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position requires a skilled and certified mechanic with a strong background in both automotive and heavy machinery. The individual will be responsible for conducting a variety of analytical assessments, performing preventive maintenance, and repairing a diverse range of equipment including construction machinery, trucks, automobiles, and hand tools. A significant aspect of this role involves working with gasoline and diesel engines with an emphasis on ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

The mechanic will need to apply technical knowledge to troubleshoot problems, implement effective maintenance strategies, and execute repairs that enhance longevity and functionality, while maintaining safety and efficiency in all operations.

WORK SCHEDULE & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  • Full‑time employment.
  • Work hours:

    7:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday‑Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break.
  • Shifts may vary seasonally, due to weather, and/or operational needs.
  • Telework:
    This position does not offer a telework option.
  • Salary:
    New employees will begin at $55,492.00 per year (before taxes). Additional details are available in the position description.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of the Commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of journey‑level mechanic experience diagnosing and repairing automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, including at least one year of diesel experience.
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Valid Pennsylvania Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission (E) removed or equivalent.
  • Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with FMCSA regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Employees may need to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications for specific equipment.
  • Active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • Completion of the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • Drug and alcohol testing in compliance with federal regulations.
