Job Title

Mechanical and Electrical Technician - Grade 3 (Full Time)

Penn State is searching for a full‑time Mechanical and Electrical Technician – Grade 3 to join the Facilities Services team. The technician performs a wide range of service, repair, installation, and maintenance tasks on commercial and domestic HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems, ensuring reliable building operations and compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Service, maintain, inspect, repair, install and replace electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems associated with commercial and domestic air conditioning, heating, ventilation, humidification, and refrigeration equipment.
  • Operate, repair, and replace controls and devices for HVAC equipment, including electric, pneumatic, electronic, thermostatic, pressure, flow, and level controls.
  • Use visual inspections or computers to monitor and control HVAC systems and maintain proper temperatures, water/steam/air flows, and pressures.
  • Maintain logs and records per D.E.R. requirements for refrigerants and coolant levels.
  • Repair and install electrical circuits such as lighting, power, switches, outlets, and laboratory equipment in distribution panels, generators, motors, and electrical boxes.
  • Operate and maintain floor‑maintenance equipment such as vacuum cleaners, power hand tools, and maintenance tools.
  • Climb poles or use boom trucks for installation and maintenance of lighting systems.
  • Test and maintain fire alarm and emergency light systems.
  • Install conduit, make bends, thread, and cut all types of electrical conduit and raceway (PVC‑MET‑rigid and wiremold).
  • Perform piping and plumbing installations on laboratory equipment, restroom fixtures, and campus building plumbing systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing materials and components such as glass, durable‑iron, PVC, copper, steel, cast iron.
  • Service, maintain, and repair well treatment and purification systems.
  • Operate hand and power tools to cut, thread, bend, and join pipe.
  • Lubricate machinery and motors on a prescribed schedule; conduct preventive‑maintenance programs.
  • Read and interpret HVAC, electrical, and plumbing schematics, blueprints, drawings, manufacturer manuals, and technical sheets; make corrections as required.
  • Plan and layout work in sequence, ensuring top quality and timely completion.
  • Determine material and labor requirements and order material from approved vendors.
  • Safeguard electrical, HVAC, and plumbing services to protect safety and prevent damage.
  • Detect unusual conditions or defective materials and report to supervisor.
  • Perform ordinary carpentry work on buildings (stairs, floors, woodwork, doors, furniture).
  • Replace floor and ceiling tile, window glass, and moldings.
  • Perform interior and exterior maintenance painting and routine roofing repairs.
  • Provide direction to full‑time or part‑time employees and address customer inquiries for job details.
  • Operate university vehicles, including trucks and snow‑removal equipment.
  • Respond to emergency calls and support the maintenance program.
Job Requirements

Requires advanced shop mathematics, complex drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, and broad training in a recognized trade or craft. Equivalent to a complete accredited, indentured apprenticeship or high school plus a 2‑year technical college education. 2 to 3 years of effective experience. U.S. citizenship required.

Work Schedule

6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Days Off

Saturday, Sunday.

Qualifications
  • 2 to 3 years of effective experience in mechanical, electrical, or HVAC maintenance.
  • Valid driver’s license; required to operate motor vehicles.
  • Successful completion of background checks per University policy.
  • U.S. citizenship; eligibility for government security clearance if applicable.

This position is part of the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union No. 8.
